Question about Sony PlayStation 2 (PS2) Console
Will work and then suddenly not read disk. Some games work, some don't. Sometimes it won't read disk on games that have been played in the past. Have cleaned it (vaccum out and used disk cleaner), cooled it down and seems to help sometimes. Pretty much hit and miss
I've helped someone else with a similar problem here: http://www.fixya.com/support/t1300166-playstation_2_console_keeps_freezing
It's not enough to use a disk to clean the laser lens. You have to take the PS2 apart and clean the lens manually. Nicotine, Incense, diffusers, and other smokes and just time itself clouds the lens. Not only that but the part that the disk sits and spins on needs to be cleaned over time as well to assure the disk is in proper alignment and Is not just kinda spinning on the spindle.
In that link i posted above you be led to directions on how to take apart your PS2 and what parts to clean. The instructions I have posted in that tutorial is for the (FAT) PS2 model not SLIMLINE. If you have a slimline model you don't have to take apart anything just open your cover and clean the parts in the video.
Hope that helps,

If your ps2 have trouble reading disks you might want to clean out the laser. flip your ps2 over and remove all the screws from the bottom then flip it over again and take off the cover. You will see another cover with a yellow sticker remove all the screws for that and take it off. You willl see the laser and the spindle take a Qtip and dip it in alcohol and rub it on the surface of the laser then you might want to get a dry qtip and rub it dry. Put everything back to gether and see if it works. you can also use a can of compressed ait and clean it out. Hope it works!

SOURCE: not reading disk
Your laser need to be adjusted or calibrate. If you have a ps2 old model is a common issue.Look around on youtube for some tutorial and if the adjusting will not work you need a new laser.Slimline Machine can not be adjusted but need new laser
