Can't change from Mono to stereo- No original remote

I can't change the smart sound from Mono to stereo without the original remote RCL9UB/04. Right now I have 2 universal remotes that I have tried. I can get all other options to work but this one. The original remote had a button for smartsound and that got you to the menu with all the audio options. Any codes or ways to get around this?

SOURCE: turning the sap off using my universal remote

If there are any menu setting buttons on the t.v. itself then I would try using them to find the sap setting.

SOURCE: Turning off the closed captioning without the remote.

I had the same problem. I got a Philips Magnavox Universal Remote that has a closed captioning button [CC]. Here's a link to the same type:

SOURCE: Can't turn subtitles off

I want to thank whomever suggested the works. I had been trying for days. Here is the solution:
Turn off the cable box and hit the menu button on the universal remote. The screen with the closed caption selection appears. Scroll down to the line regarding subtitles and turn it off.

There could be a dedicated button on remote that says 'cc'. Your Tivo box could have cc built in.

I don't have a remote and the tv is in mono how do

It will usually default to Stereo and still show mono--answer is to manually try (usually not possible) you need to get into the menu with the original remote---Philips at my last count had over 25 different IR codes for their products==many of which are not available with universal remotes etc.

Can't change from MONO to AUTO mode

Can't make sound from mono to auto is your problem I thinks and posts this solution.
Hit the "Menu" button and surf through, come to "Sound Adjust" window.
The settings allow you to change and adjust sound in your TV. There are Bass, Treble and Balance control to adjust to your individual taste.
To adjust them
1. Press Menu button.
2. Press UP or DOWN button to select the desired item.
3. Press => or 4. Press EXIT button when finished.
When adjusting the parameter of "Balance" control, always set it to mid position to get stereo sound from both speakers. If it is set to any extreme end, there will be no output from the speaker of that side, and will hear as mono.
If you press "0" [Zero] button, you can reset the sound settings to it Factory settings.
To select 'Streo mode;
1. Press "Menu" button.
2. Press UP or DOWN button to select MTS [Multi-channel Telivision Sound].
3. Press => or [The ON AIR arrowtells you if a broadcast is in stereo AND/OR contains the SAP.
Press "Exit" button when finished.

Keep the TV in stereo mode to get the best sound quality. The sound will work in stereo

mode even if a certain broadcast is in mono sound only.

Choose the mono setting to reduce excessive noise on a certain channel or broadcast.
Selecting SAP will allow you to hear an alternative soundtrack, if one is available.

Take your remote, go to menu, scroll down until you see sound settings, when you see mono/stereo, use the right arrow and click it until cursor is over stereo, next press enter, that should restore your stereo sound.

How do I get my rca truflat tv to get out of mono?

Press the MTS on the remote control handset to select STEREO, MONO or SAP. All the options will be available only when the current TV channel is broadcasting that option. Channels will not always carry programes, that have all MTS options. If "STEREO" appears on the screen when you select a channel means stereo sound is available with current programme. You can hear sound from both speakers. If broadcast is not strong and clear, stereo sound will not be available. Press "MTS" button to change it to "Mono". This will eliminate the noise. If "MONO" appears on the screen when you select a channel, stereo effect will not be availabe, even though you have set it to stereo. If "SAP" appears when you select a channel 'Second Audio Programe' [SAP] broadcasting is available for that programme. Press the "MTS" button to 'SAP' and you can hear that programe in different language or some other kind of audio.

If you have a universal remote you should be able to get into the menu system and select the AUDIO tab. From there you should be able to select STEREO/MONO/SAP

Mono to stereo

You can't convert mono to stereo since the TV only has a single input, and not the separate right and left channel circuits needed for stereo. If you are connecting a stereo source like a DVD player, what you can do is combine the right and left channels into one and connect that to the mono input. You need an audio Y-adapter with two RCA jacks going into a single RCA plug. These are available from Radio Shack. If you are outside the US, there should be local sources such as a stereo shop where you can find the adapter. This won't give you stereo, obviously, but you will have all the sound.

Input problem

If you have the original remote, hit video, source, or input button, if it dont have them, then try to change the tv to channel 00 (zero or zerozero), if not then the channels might have to scroll to it, from channel 02 down to make it loop, if it goes to the next highest channel, then you need a remote. It may be set in the menu options to have the video source not saved to your list of saved channels. when you scan the channels, the tv might not look for the A/V source (audio / video), maybe just the RF source. The 3 DVD RCA wires are 1 video and 2 stereo, one stereo for left and one stereo for right. The TV has only 2 , 1 for video and 1 for mono 1 channel sound. This wouldnt have anything to do with why you cant use the DVD player. but try that with the original remote (or a universal remote that is set to your tv set that has either video, input, source or something similar. It is what tells the tv to change from the cable source (RF) and the AV source (the Red White and Yellow plugs, in your TV's case, 2 plugs, one yellow and the other either red or white or something). Dont really know how to explain it much more but hope it helps.
