SOURCE: Scanner prints just black sheet

The mystery is solved!!
I live in Norway and my CanoScan 5000F has worked brilliantly until it suddenly started to display a black preview in ScanGear, black scanning and to no surprise,- a completely black printout.
My first thought was that the scanner-lamp had died,- but that was strange because I hadn't used the scanner that much. I hadn't made any changes to my computer system either. The operating system (Windows XP), scanner software and drivers were exactly as before.
I made a new testrun and saw the light come on from the side of the scanner and move along the platen as usual. The sound and operation of the scanner seemed to be all normal.
A quick check on the internet revealed that there were many other guys out there who had experienced the same problem. Some had tried new drivers, uninstalled and reinstalled, but to no luck. I also tried the same method, but was stuck with the same problem.

I have a background as an electronic service-engineer, and this mystery really gave me a good challenge. Why did so many people experience the same thing? Why couldn't Canon answer and give a reasonable explanation to the phenomenon? What was the common factor in all these cases?

Every scanner is connected to the mains via a power-unit. Mine is European standard with type nr. PA-08E. It is labelled with output DC 12V (stabilized!) and a rated current of 1.25 A at this voltage.

I brought the power-unit to my lab for a test. When I measured the voltage without any load (no scanner connected) it read 12 V as stated,- so it seemed to be ok.
But when I connected a load (a car light bulb 12 V / 3 W - equivalent to a current of just 0.25 A), the lamp just barely glowed and the voltage (that should be 12 V constantly) dropped to just 4 V.

This proved without any doubt that the power-unit was defect. It could no longer maintain a constant 12 V during load.

I had a variable power-supply in my lab that could be set to 12 V and connected to the scanner for a test. But Canon had made a very peculiar connection to the scanner by using a rare male power plug (with a center (+) pin inside). Normally a round hollow (female) plug is used on such power-units.
So I cut the DC cable a few centimeters from the power-unit, split the two leads 4 cm apart and dismantled 1 cm of insulation from each end. On my power-unit one of the leads were marked all the way with text, and this one proved to be the minus (-) lead connected to the outer (metal) part of the DC plug.
The two ends were connected to my power-supply (with correct polarity!), and the other end with the DC plug were connected to the scanner. Power-supply was switched on and my computer system was restarted.
I opened the Paint Shop Pro program, clicked 'Twain Acquire' and the ScanGear CS window appeared.
After this insident a calibration of the scanner is required: Close the lid with no document inside, click 'Advanced Mode >>' down right and then 'Settings' / 'Quality' / 'Calibration'. The scanner will do some adjustments for a few seconds and finish when the small calibration window close.
At last my CanoScan 5000F came back to life again. The preview was normal, and the scanned images as superb as they had been before.

Conclusion: Do not throw your scanner away! Buy a new power-unit with DC 12 V stabilized and at least 1.25 A. Brand is not important as long as it is of good quality and correct voltage/current, but cut and use the cable and plug from the defect power-unit as I described earlier. Remember to isolate the connecting area (+ and -) firmly.

SOURCE: The buttons on the Scanner itself will no longer work.

You should be able to reconfigure the button settings by clicking on the "Settings" button in the CanoScan Toolbox application. Although the default setting is Scan, Copy and eMail, each of the buttons can be configured to do whatever operation you choose.

SOURCE: "warming up" all the time

Be careful fixing this problem with the firmware update version 0087 dated May 28, 2009. We downloade this update and installed it into the scanner. That fixes this issue but causes an intermittent issue where scanning stops and a "Lamp was over (-4430)" error message is printed. My workaround for this latest problem is to tell the user to turn off the printer, exit the Capture Perfect software, then run a script I wrote for him which stops and restarts the XP image capture service, then turn it back on and continue scanning. Canon tech support says it might be a USB issue but backed off that position when I mentioned it is intermittent, occurring on one out of 20 to 30 stacks of paper.

I have canon PIXMA 145. I am not able scan . The moment i place paper and press scan it is showing " printer under repair error code is 2.144.0" Can u suggest me anything. Is it a machanical...

I have many years reparing canon scanners so here is my suggestion to you.

When I do my scanning, and by the way I own a canon pixma also. I do it through the software I never hit the scan button. You can do it through Microsoft paint by using from scanner or camera and aquiring and image. I use paint shop pro so I just open that program and just aquire an image from my scanner. I hope this helps you out but I think its a software problem, because the software takes full control of the scanner if you do it the way I just suggested.

I hope this helps you out.

I bought the Canon Canoscan N1240u flatbed scanner. I downloaded the drivers and plugged in the cord that came with it but it doesn't do anything.

Just to be sure, did you install the driver in addition to downloading it? Full software or basic driver. The software must be installed before connecting the data cable. What OS are you using? (if you have Vista 64-bit, it is not compatible) If you didn't install the software, uninstall the OS driver and disconnect the data cable before attempting to install the Canon software. Otherwise see the notes for scanning with other software.

First are you trying to use the scanner buttons? These will only work if the full software is installed. For the buttons to work, you have to set up the scanner button destinations in the Canon software first. Also a monitoring program must be running for the button presses to work.

So try scanning from the computer first. If you still get an error, try a new data cable. If you are using a USB hub, try a direct connection. Make sure your USB ports work with a known working device. You can also check if the ports are disabled for security (in the Device Manager for Windows) or power savings (an advanced setting from the Screen Saver).

Once you have scanned successfully from the computer, go to the Settings section of the Toolbox to set the default destinations for the scan buttons.

If you only installed the basic driver, you can scan with Paint (XP or Vista), File > Import from Camera or Scanner > New Scan. Vista also has Windows Fax and Scan (New Scan) and Photo Gallery to acquire scans. I don't know the Mac software. Third-party software will also work if installed.

I hope this helps.

RE Canon scanner problem 'No driver found'. downloaded new updated software twice and got the same message. Using Apple Mac Os x (snow L.)

Pls disconnect the scanner, uninstall scanner driver and switch of the computer. After restarting, run Scan disk and then install appropriate driver for MAC OS and connect the scanner. This should work.

I have installed scanner and disc but cannot find how to use it.I found the test box and that works but now how do I scan?thanks

Canon and other Scanners have both hardware and software buttons to scan documents and photographs.
Scanning with a computer is done with a destination in mind. So the buttons and the software are associated with destinations.
Typical destinations are File, email, Application, and print.
In a simple scan process for copy or print, the item is placed face down on the scanner, then the print button is pressed on the front of the scanner.
The software for the scanner pops up on the screen and the scanner moves the imaging light across the scanner under the glass, reading the item on the scanner. The software sends the image to the default printer and it prints a copy.

You will need to setup your preferences in the software so that a photograph is scanned properly and a newspaper article is scanned to come out clear black and white.
Documents are best saved as PDF files and photographs as TIFF files.
The software will have an expert mode where you can change all the settings and a beginner mode where you let the software decide.
Canon has a great document for your scanner. If it is not on the disk, here is the link. It is called CanoScan 4200F Scanning Guide. I think it will help you to use the scanner for any task.

If you go to the Canon Support site for this scanner they have a firmware upgrade that seems to specifically address this problem:

Re : CanoScan N640P/Lexmark Printing Problem.

There could be a setting in your scanner drivers to fix that. It would be under background settings.

The other thing you can do is preview the document first and select the area you want to scan. Then press the scan button again. That way the black background that isn't needed will not print.

Apple Canon CanoScan N670U

Are you referring to the scanner or the computer not having a light on?
The scanner only lights up when it is scanning. If your computer is running ok, check the Apple System Profiler to see if the scanner is detected. What Mac OS are you using? Leopard is not supported with this scanner model.

Printing - using the 'copy' mode of the scanner

This suggests the the 'copy' element of the software is not VISTA compatible. In VISTA help in my computer - check out the 'compatibility' options and select an operating system that the copy function did work under
