I once owned a PNI Radar detector with a compass feature. Mine had to be calibrated by actually driving in clockwise and then counter-clockwise circled (three times each if I recall correctly. Check your manual for a similiar procedure. If you can find one, pick up a Uniden GPSRD unit. These work off the Defense Department's satellites and never need any calibration. They also track your speed from space and displays it on the detector. You can also mark locations, and get latitude/longitude information whenever you need it as well as directions to anywhere in the US. VERY COOL DEVICE! So cool, I bought one for each vehicle... however one was recently stolen.:( Hope this information helps you out.

XTR-590, powered up plugged in, 1rst day having it, drove by 2 uconn dodge chargers and 3 state police in the course of 30 seconds and didnt hear a peep. I doubt they all had radar off? is there something...

When the unit goes through its self test - make sure the display shows either RADAR or COMBO as if it just shows COMPASS, the radar section of the unit is turned off and its basically a compass unit.

It is possible that you ran across officers that didn't have their radar guns turned on.

Whistler 1765 -- why does it give you all kinds of false alarms when there is no radar in the area. Also it alarms for one minuet at full signal strength for about 1 minuet then stops. Is there any way to...

Do you have another radar detector on at the same time? If so, turn the other detector off. Detectors will "talk" to each other when their on in the same vehicle?

Have you tried the unit in a differnet vehicle to see if the problem remains?

Does not sound alarm till its to late

The lower end Whistler radar detector models do not have particularly good performance against all radar gun frequencies. Whistler's XTR-690, Pro78 and XTR-695 on the other hand do perform very well against all police radar guns. Its basically a matter of you get what you pay for.
