i had this amber light problem too. i called dell and the technician said to refeed the ram and try to turn it on, which didnt work. since that didnt work he said that it would be the motherboard. i took the tower to a friend who knows a lil more than me, and he ordered another motherboard that was compatible of coarse. when he got the motherboard, he installed it and when he tried to boot up it would run halfway and stop. so far he cant complete the boot up. hes tried to test different parts to working computers. but cant get a solution to the problem. it may be the processor but hes afraid to test it and fry it. the motherboard has proprietary connections so you just cant take the motherboard and connect it to other pieces and throw it into another case. he tried to put it into another dell 4500s case and still no luck.......what could this be???? so far it looks as if it would be better to buy another working tower for 250 bucks and it be an upgrade compared to the 4500s. any info would be nice

Ok - the amber light of doom on a dell means one of two things - either your power supply is pooched - or your motherboard, If under warranty dell will send out a friendly tech to replace them - if not it will cost you a bit. get the price and consider if it worth upgrading instead. Contact your dell rep or dell tech support and see what they say

Dimension 3100 turns on the power button has a steady orange light there is also an orange light on motherboard cpu and power suplly fans working but wont bot up

Blinking amber (orange) indicates a problem with the power supply inside the computer. If the system cannot boot and there is a solid amber light, this could indicate a problem with the power connections for the CPU on the system board (see "Power Problems" in your Owner's Manual).

Hi Thanks for your question
I think you are right about power supply. This would be my diagnose. Be careful with your PC because faulty power supplies may fry your motherboard. I would recommend replacing it. This isn't expensive and it's pretty easy to get done. I hope this helps. Good Luck

Dell 4500 won't turn on,power light amber/green

Is the light more amber or more green? If you push the button and it goes amber, then you probably have a bad power supply. Try getting another power supply to test. If that doesn't solve the problem, then you probably have a bad motherboard.

Amber light on start button of Dell Dimension 4500

This is one of three things.

1. Bad Power Supply - Check to see if the fan is spinning
2. Short in the the wiring or Bad piece of Hardware - Check wiring make sure none of it is damaged. Disconnect one component at a time and try powering the PC on.
3.Badmother

Try steps 1 and 2 and if those do not work it is a bad motherboard.

This from a Dell certified Technician.

Blinking amber light with green 4 light

If the power light is blinking amber, the computer is receiving electrical power, but an internal power problem might exist.
Try, unplugging the power cable from the pc, and reinsert it, if this does not help try a differnt power outlet, if this dont help, open the computer, take the power Molex conector out of the mother board and try turning it on, if this dont help, take out the Memory modules and reseat them, if this dont work you may want to ring up dell support.

Hope this helps!

Blinking Amber light on the tower

If it is one the front near the power button, it indicates power supply is failing...and other indicator is the motherboard is failing.
Now if it is in the rear where the ethernet cable hooks up...solid amber means you are connected, blinking amber means activity on the line...no problem there- very normal. I hope it is in the rear.
Please leave rating, thank you

Dell Dimension 5100 Won't start up

Hi

First disconnecting the power cord and re-seat all connections (Keyboard, Mouse espercially). Connect up the power cord and try powering the PC.

To help you troubleshoot a problem, Dell Dimension 5100 has four diagnostic lights labeled "1," "2," "3," and "4" on the front panel. When the computer starts normally, the lights flash. After the computer starts, all four lights display solid green. If the computer malfunctions, the color and sequence of the lights identify the problem.

If the computer failed to start up check the diagnostic lights color and sequence and Check the link below for more info (Assuming you have another system that can access internet)
http://support.dell.com/support/edocs/systems/dim5100/en/sm/tshoot1.htm#wp1120147

Alternatively, contact Dell Support with the diagnostic lights color and sequence to raise a service call if the system if under warranty.
