Question about JVC AV-56WP74 56" Rear Projection HDTV-Ready Television

1 Answer

Bad convergence JVC AV56WP30 purchased 11/02. in 11/05 I had 2 STK392-110 IC's and QRX01G3-2R2 resistor replaced due to a convergence problem (red channel is about 1.5" off to the left). 2 days ago it happened again and I don't feel like paying $600 to have it fixed again. My questions are: 1. are there different STK392-110 IC's for different brands and models of tv's? 2. can a non-repairman remove and install these parts? 3. should I replace the resistor the same as they did the first time? 4. how do I get into the service screen? 5. is there a manual available that I can read to familiarize myself with this proceedure? thank you in advance for any help/advice you can give. Neil

I WILL ANSWER THESE QUESTIONS IN ORDER,
1. STK 392-110 IS A REGULATOR. REPLACE THEM WITH SAME NUMBER THAT CAME OUT. DIFFERENT TVS USE DIFFERENT REGULATORS.
2. YES. MY PARTNER IS A DUMMY AND HE CAN DO IT
YOU WILL NEED SOLDER, SOLDER BRAID,(USED FOR REMOVING SOLDER) HEAT SINK COMPOUND (THATS THE WHITE PUTTY THAT YOU WILL SEE ON THE REGULATORS) AND AN OHM METER.
3. YOU SHOULD REPLACE THE RESITORS THAT ARE BAD. CHECK THEM WITH THE METER ( THEY SHOULD READ THE SAME VALUE THAT IS PRINTED ON THEM. EX; 1.8 OHMS SHOULD READ 1.8 OHMS ON THE METER. (THEY MAY BE THE SAME AS THE FIRST REPAIR BUT, CHECK ALL OF THEM) REPLACE WITH EXACTY THE SAME VALUE.
4. ON THE COVERGENCE MODULE THERE MAY BE A SMALL BUTTON THAT BRINGS UP THE GRID ON THE SCREEN WHEN THE TV IS ON. IF NOT ; YOU SHOULD BE ABLE TO BRING THE GRID UP WITH A JVC FACTORY REMOTE . (GO INTO THE MENU)
5. THERE MY BE A MANUAL FOR THIS BUT I HAVE NOT EVER SEEN ONE.
I HOPE THIS HELPS YOU, PLESE BE CARFULL. EVEN SIMPLE SOLDERING TAKES A LITTLE PRACTICE. DONT WORK ON TV WHILE ITS PLUGGED IN.

I have a green line converge issue i can't get it to line up, i get it close then th red line moves out of wack. The right side of the picture starts to look 3D. What can I do

Convergence issue, if you cannot fix it by convergence adjustment, is un-doubtedly due to malfunctioning STK amplifier ICs. There are two of them that need to be replaced . They are located behind large aluminium heatsinks as shown in the image below.

The ICs can be purchased on ebay by using the IC numbers in your set as search keyword. You will have de-solder the old ones, apply silicon based thermal grease to the replacements and solder them into the board. Note that you have to make sure that they are making good contact with the heatsink when you replace them. You will also need to test and replace any resistors that the ICs may have taken out when they have gone bad. I hope you know how to use a multimeter(or ohm-meter) and can read resistor color codes.

JVC AV56wp74 convergence. Resistor before ICs?

It's recommended to replace all the defective parts first because if you only replace the defective resistor, it might burnt again if the convergence IC is shorted internally. I would also suggest to measure the other low value resistors with multimeter.

You can call in a shop or do it yourself. Average repair bill from a shop will range between 300 - 600. Average DIY cost will be 70.00

Your TV most likely has a convergence failure. ( common problem )

Here are some of the most common symptoms and example photos of a convergence problem

  • Screen looks 3D
  • Colors don't line up
  • One or more colors can't be adjusted when using the convergence menu.
  • Screen is bowed or warped.
Here are some photos of convergence problems.

Here is a quick test....

Using your original remote go-to the tv settings then goto the convergence section.

Try to adjust the red and then the blue convergence.

You should be able to move them up, down, left, and right.

If you can't move them in all directions your convergence chips are bad and should be replaced. This is a common problem.

You will need to replace the convergence chips and possibly some convergence resistors and pico fuses. Its a fairly easy DIY job or you can call in a pro. If you want to do the repair yourself check the site www.TvRepairKits.com. Their kits include a photo instruction guide, original OEM Sanyo STK chips, convergence resistors, pico fuses, thermal paste, email/phone support, etc.

Jvc av48wp74 horizontal convergence unadjustable after after repair

you have to lift one side of the resistor from circuit in order to measure resistance otherwise a open resistor will not read open as you will be reading the resistance from the surrounding circuit. Always lift one side of a resistor out of circuit when testing with a ohms meter.
