Assuming that you are using Windows XP, the easiest solution would be to boot from your XP cd and do a system repair. Please let me know if you need more info on how to do this.

Have you tried starting in safe mode? Do do this, switch on your thinkpad and press F8 continuously until you get a menue with various options. One of these options is to boot in safe mode. Select this option and and start in safe mode. Once your thinkpad has booted into Windows, click on start, then all programs, accessories, system tools, system restore. Restore your system to an earlier date by selecting a date on the displayed calender when your computer was still working okay.
If by doing a system restore in safe mode does not solve your problem, you will have to obtain a Windows xp cd in order to sort the problem out.
I hope this helps to solve your crisis.

SOURCE: Windows could not start because

Fix the problem

Best Method would be this one, if you have the Windows Disk.

Use the Bootcfg utility in the Recovery Console to correct the Boot.ini file: 1. Use the Windows XP CD-ROM to start your computer. 2. When you receive the message to press R to repair Windows by using the Recovery Console, press the R key. 3. Select the Windows installation that you want, and then type the administrator password when prompted. 4. Type bootcfg /rebuild, and then press ENTER. 5. When the Windows installation is located, the following instructions are displayed: Add installation to boot list? (Yes/No/All)
[Type Y in response to this message.]

Enter Load Identifier:
[This is the name of the operating system. Type Windows XP Professional or Windows XP Home Edition.]

Enter OS Load options:
[Leave this field blank, and then press ENTER]. After you perform the preceding steps, restart the computer, and then select the first item on the boot menu. This should allow Windows XP to start normally.

After Windows XP has successfully loaded, the Boot.ini can be modified to remove the incorrect entry.

I have a IBM ThinkPad Type 2384 with Window XP. It was working fine until my kid went on Facebook & tried to purchase Facebook credits. The Computer froze while it was Downloding. I tried everything to...

Only the paid service makes calls it is not wise to publish your number on the open net. Aside from that facebook had not much to do with the Windows crash. Although you had little choice after it locked up to do a hard shut down, you always take the chance of corrupting your drive. If you have one place the Windows factory CD into the tray and choice the option for Repair Windows. If not it should have the restore within the hard drive. To access this feature reboot the pc when u see the IBM splash screen "may say Thinkpad" This would be the 1st thing that pops up when u hit the power button. When u see this tap the F11 key on your keyboard. Follow the directions and again you would want to do the repair. This will replace the missing files Windows is looking for.

I have a thinkpad that won't boot it says windows could not start because the following file is missing or corrupt: <windows root>\system32\hal.dll. please re-install a copy of the above...

You need to enter the BIOS and change the boot sequence to boot from CD. You usually have to press either F2 or delete but it should tell you on the boot screen (displayed as enter setup on some) or F12 to enter boot menu.

You should then boot from the CD. Depending on the type of disc you have you may be prompted to press a key to enter the recovery console. If so then do it and in the command prompt window anter CHKDSK /r .(note there is a space between the K and /)

Thjis will check and repair the hard drive and install the missing file without you losing anything.

I get a message that Windows could not start because the following file is missing or corrupt: /WINDOWSSYSTEM32CONFIGSYSTEM I bought this thinkpad preloaded with Windows XP and do not have an original set...

About the only thing you can do is buy or borrow another Windows XP install disc as this is the only way you'll be able to extract the missing file using the repair console. Hope this helps.

Start up problem with my IBM thinkpad windows XP

type f8 at startup and try last known configuration. if that doesnt work then safe mode. If that doesnt work then try to find a duplicate file (backup), try to find file with dos console - go to windows/system32 and type dir ntoskrnl*.*   so youll find out if there was maybe a copy of this file.  IF you HAVE a Fast PC then sometimes its easier to install a fresh copy of windows, then to search for such errors.
