Question about Gateway GT5220 PC Desktop
My comp has a malfunction in it, and when i turn it on, the fan turns on, but nothing on the monitor shows up. Also, it makes beeping noises every 3 seconds. Is this problem common? Does this mean the motherboard is dieing? help! I've had this comp for 2 years, is that effect the reason why its dying?
What may be happening is that files are corrupt as a result of a HD failure. This is not that uncommon. It has happened to my computers causing strange beeps and often repeated clicking noise coming from the hard drive. HD failure can happen anytime; when booting up, while the computer is running. The only way I've found to fix this is to buy a new hard drive and reinstall the operating system and programs you typically use.
You may be able to recover files from the ailing drive however. After you get the new hard drive working with your newly installed operating system and all is working, you can setup the ailing drive as a slave while setting your new drive as a master. You need to power off the computer and consult the data sheets for jumper settings.
This will allow you to boot up and access your old HD as a spare. If your lucky the data files, pics, music and documents you created will be in a region of the hard drive that isn't corrupted. Be prepared however to expect some unrecoverable files. If there is physical damage to the drive mechanism like a stuck read/write head then you may be totally out of luck. I have in some instances been able to unstick the HD by giving it a sharp rap on it's edge and even opening it to push the head free. Success for such a radical procedure is rare, but when it works, you have enough time to copy files over before enough dust collects on the exposed HD.
Assuming your able to access the old HD as a secondary drive, copy all of your files over to a backup directory on the new HD. I would recommend an expternal backup HD that can be used to automatically save your files before the next failure happens.
