Question about Audio Players & Recorders

3 Answers

My Sony STR-DE575 receiver has lost most output in the right front and left surround channels. I have tested all channels with the same speaker and the problem occurs consistently. I have opened up the device and removed the main board looking for obvious issues and checked resistence between a few components, but nothing obvious jumps out.

I did look for obvious burned components or bulging capacitors. I can look more closely at the capacitors this evening. Apart from the buzzing sound I get when I try to use the tuner, the problem is with the low output from 2 of the channels, so I was focusing on what appeared to be the channel specific components.

There are 10 components (presumably 2 per channel) that I was looking at in particular. Not sure if these are MOSFET or something else. They looked ok, but I wasn't sure how to test. I did test the resistance between all of their terminals and it was consistent. Other possibility I was considering was bad soldering contacts. I repaired my Sony 32" CRT tv a couple of times by resouldering several components.

Double checked and did not find any bulging capacitors.

I found the following post which mentions some of the components I checked, but they all seemed to have similar resistance measure between their terminals:

Any advice on specific areas that I should investigate?

  • mklumpen Dec 03, 2008

How can I see a previously proposed solution? I accidentally re-posted my problem this morning before I had seen that a new solution had been proposed. It contained information about components form the receiver's service manual.

  • mklumpen Dec 05, 2008

Thanks for the solution. I don't have the service manual, but I did find the parts listed. Although I am not entirely sure how to test these components, I did check the resistance between all terminals and they appeared to be the same as the other working components. I did a factory reset, which did not help, so I re-soldered all of the suspect components and still no change. In my testing I discovered that the left channel, although working, has lower output than the center and left surround channel, so it appears to have problems as well.

I have spent about as much time on this as I willing to, so am now shopping for a new receiver.

    Thanks.

Sounds to me like you have not got the cener speaker working properly. Try another surround mode, then check the speaker by switching it with another known good one just to make sure i the problem is the speaker or the receiver. You can also do the speaker test and make sure the center speaker is set to be turned on in the menu settings.

Here is a link to the owners/operation manual and you can find any information you need to check your receiver out. If you never are able to get it working, you need to take it to a service center to be checked out.

    Hello,
Let me know do you have service manual of STR-DE575 as shown below...

Suspected parts could be Q751-752-753-754 for Right Front amp section and..
Q651-652-653-654 in Left Surround amp section.
I would also recommend to perform Factory Reset mode before any part testing / replacement.
Factory Reset procedure is as follows...
While pressing "Video" and "2CH" button, press "Power/ Standby" button. unit will go to standby, repeat the same procedure and unit will select factory Default Settings.
Let me know if you need further info.
    Good Luck.

Have you looked in the manual? Basic speaker setup with test tones will certify the basic hardware. Then onboard FM. Then add the compexity of external and digital sources.

Str-gx800es sony receiver problem- right channel speaker sound is 'static', low and distorted. I have checked checked all speaker and output/input source cable connections with no luck. All left channel...

If you have checked the speakers and wiring, the right channel has a audio driver or output problem, which explains the low volume, static, and distortion. A service technician will be required to fix the receiver so it will balance the left side.

When trying to watch a dvd through a blu ray player, the background sound is coming in loud and clear, however when the main actors talk, their voices are not coming through.

Hello,
If you don't have a center channel you will experience this problem. The center channel is where all dialog is sent to. To fix it, you need the set the receiver to phantom center. Go into the setup menu into speaker setup and tell the receiver that you dont have a center channel installed. Once you do that, it will send dialog the the front left and right speakers.
Good Luck

Center Channel not working

First of all check that it has not got switched off somehow. After that, what I would do is trace the wires back (inside the unit) from the center speaker connector. This will take you back to the output semi-conductors for that channel. I would suspect these first, you might even see damage! You should anyway be able to look the numbers up on the net. If they are cheap I would replace them anyway. If that doesn't work I suggest you hunt down the service manual, it might have suggestions in it.
