Question about Sony KP-51HW40 51" Rear Projection Television

Green arcs from bottom up with darkest one at bottom on dark screens

I have green arcs from the bottom lower left to lower right progressively upwards a few inches apart with the lowest arc being the brightest. I am guessing "convergence" ? problem but I know nothing. I am handy and IF I can do the adjustment please tell me how. If it is a component replacement, I will call a service guy. Sony doesn't have anything on their site. The TV is about 3 years old from Good Guys so, so much for those bankrupt people. Thanks in advance. Fred Adler San Diego

These are problems with retrace lines. What you should take a look at are the settings for the convergence / retrace lines Basically you need to open the TV and the job is about 15 minutes to solve the issue with arched lines, either blue, greed, or red. There is a great how-to guide here:

Re: Green arcs from bottom up with darkest one at bottom...

There is a way to get rid of the lines, you need to enter a code from your remote to access a hidden menu. From there you can adjust the lasers in the tv(green lines)I beleive it is very sensitive though, if done wrong can reck the tv. Not sure of the code or directions on how to exactly adjust the lasers, actually looking for them my self. Hope i was some help though!

Sony rear projection screen is red then tv shuts off

Can be 1 of 2 things. 1st the red tube just needs the voltage to it turned down. In the front of TV (you have to remove the lower front half of TV to access it) is a plastic square with 6 knobs. The from left to right top knobs control focus for blue, green red. The bottom knobs control voltage to each tube in same order (so lower right knob for red) turn SLOWLY to left to reduce voltage until excessive red and lines go away. If you over turn left or right set will turn off. If that does not fix it or if lines reappear then option 2 is that red picture tube is failing outright and needs replacement.

I expect the answer to your question is YES! The convergence amplifiers are a common problem in many projection sets. When you search for the replacements you should find that the originals have been superceded by improved parts. Also be aware that when these parts fail, they will usually damage a resistor in the convergence yoke return path. The resistor must be replaced with one of the correct value or the convergence, though responsive, will be out of range.

D52W19 No pix, sound good - now green light blinks, no come on

First of all you need to find out which CRT leaked and replace it before any other repairs are done. The clear liquid is conductive and has done damage to the CRT board or boards.

Red Bowed Lines / Red Hue

I tried the solution that was posted for this problem and it worked!
Just remove the Low front panel by removing the two bottom screws that are covered by two screw covers, then remove the second panel (black) by removing the 4 screws then you'll notice a module with 6 adjustment knobs, get a small screw driver, and with the t.v. on, being carefull , and with somebody accross the room looking at the screen begin with the lower left knob and turn left very slowly and ask the person across the room to let you know if the screen is better or not, after this I had to adjust the green as well so, I adjusted the next knob over to the left. Do this adjustment carefully and try to remenber the original position of the knobs in case you have to go back.f
Good Luck,

Green lines appear on the screen when dark picture is shown. Others have the same problem but can not figure out how to remove the front cover. Please help us

The front panel normally has some screws that need to be removed from the inside of the set. You need to remove the back cover first and you should see the screws. Then the panel pops off. Good Luck

Arched picture at bottom seperating the green and red

Your tv has a convergance failure. the convergance ic's need to be replaced. Upgraded part # STK392-150 or STK392-160. Both ic's should be replaced to prevent future failure of other colors.

Green Arcs Problem continues

That model is older than 3 years old. If the lines are mostly visable when you select an input (video 1,video2 etc) that has nothing connected to it and they appear as faint lines that go diagonal then an adjustment wont cure the problem. Some of those set had faulty picture tubes from day one. You might only see green right now but in the futire the red and blue will start showing the same symtom. If pressing the flash foucus and goes through the process successfully then your convergence circuit is most likely ok. The CRT's range in price and now in most cases the blue and the green are no longer availiable and have to be pulled for a rebuild. I personally wouldn't suggest anyone go into the service menu unless they know what they are doing.
