Message: printer not responding - hesitates and prints

When I hit print... the printer hesitates... then says printer not responding - hesitates and prints.
???
I have uninstalled and then installed the printer with the disk I have. I have not tried to load any new drivers. Are there drivers out there that might help? Where would I find them?
