Question about Amana Heating & Cooling

1 Answer

I have an AMS9 Amana Heating and Air Conditioning unit that is not working properly. There is no flame and the igniter can't seem to start a flame when it goes through it's sequential iginition retries. The diagnostic LED light code is of a continuous/rapid flash, which the instruction manual attributes the problem to "Polarity of 115 or 24 volt power is reversed." The unit is only 2 and a half years old was working prefectly fine before this issue occurred. The only anomaly that occurred the day the heater stopped working was the power went out of the entire house for about ten minutes - I had thought the heater was working after the power was restored by I could be wrong. Maybe the outage had something to do with this or maybe the igniter is bad? Any ideas on how I could fix this? If this is a polarity issue, what do I need to do to "reverse" it? And if it is an igniter issue, is this something I can replace? thanks, bill

How a Central Air Conditioning System Works
amn_howac.jpg

Facts:
  • The typical central air conditioning system is a split system, with an outdoor air conditioning, or "compressor bearing unit" and an indoor coil, which is usually installed on top of the furnace in the home.
  • Using electricity as its power source, the compressor pumps refrigerant through the system to gather heat and moisture from indoors and remove it from the home.
  • Heat and moisture are removed from the home when warm air from inside the home is blown over the cooled indoor coil. The heat in the air transfers to the coil, thereby "cooling" the air.
  • The heat that has transferred to the coil is then "pumped" to the exterior of the home, while the cooled air is pumped back inside, helping to maintain a comfortable indoor temperature.
  • Central air conditioning can also be provided through a package unit or a heat pump.

Benefits:
  • Indoor comfort during warm weather - Central air conditioning helps keep your home cool and reduces humidity levels.
  • Cleaner air - As your central air conditioning system draws air out of various rooms in the house through return air ducts, the air is pulled through an air filter, which removes airborne particles such as dust and lint. Sophisticated filters may remove microscopic pollutants, as well. The filtered air is then routed to air supply ductwork that carries it back to rooms.
  • Quieter operation - Because the compressor bearing unit is located outside the home, the indoor noise level from its operation is much lower than that of a free-standing air conditioning unit.

Amana air conditioning unit

You either have a blower that is gone out,or the start capacitor is bad,it is most likely the blower motor.

I have central air ( Dimond 80 York Heating Air conditoning Unit ) My air conditoning unit has stopped working. The board has checked out ok.but there seems to be a voltage problem some where from inside...

Try the following step.....

On a call for heat, the 24 volt thermostat sends a signal to the control module. The control module will indicate a call for heat with a light on the control either blinking or remain solid depending upon model. The inducer (exhaust) blower will purge all gasses from the furnace and pressurize a pressure switch. Once the pressure switch tells the module to continue, the electronic ignition will energize and send 120 volts to the igniter. The igniter will glow and you will be able to see it if viewed thru the small inspection port. Once the igniter gets hot enough, it sends a signal to the module opening up the gas valve (24 volts). Either a pilot will come on or the burner tube will ignite then spread the flame to all burners. Lastly a safety sensor will be looking for a certain temperature within a few seconds and the furnace will continue to operate and the room air blower will turn on in a minute or two.

What could go wrong? The unit will not run if there is no signal from the thermostat (bad thermostat or broken wire), the control module does not sense a signal from the thermostat (bad control), the inducer does not energize (bad motor), the pressure switch does not close (blocked vent piping, bad switch, plugged condensate hose), the igniter does not energize (bad control, bad igniter), the gas valve does not open or there is no gas (bad gas valve, broken wire, no gas), the pilot does not light (dirty pilot), the burner does not light (bad burner, plugged orifice, not enough combustion air), the flame does not spread to each burner (bad flame spreader, dirty flame spreader, more bad burners), the flame safety sensor does not detect flame (dirty or bad flame spreader, bad flame sensor, broken wire, bad control), or the room air blower does not energize (bad fan motor, bad control).

I HAVE A RUUD SILHOUETTE GAS FURNANCE. The pilot light keeps blowing out. When I light the pilot flame it seems to work perfectly at ignition. As the Manual instructs, I hold down the ignition switch for...

Short answer, yes. However you could have another problem. Replace the thermocouple that keeps the pilot lit. You can get a universal one at any good hardware or farm store. Make sure the new thermocouple is well into the pilot flame. If the blower knocks out the pilot flame again, I would be suspecting cross contamination from a crack in the heat exchanger. As the exchanger heats up, it may be causing a small crack to open and allows the blower to extinguish the flame. It may also be causing a leak of Carbon Monoxide into the heated room air. I would get it checked out very quickly.

I have an amana air command 90 furnace. the burner won't light.

This unit goes in steps, 1-- thru--4 Step 1, vent fan blower motor runs & prove thru the air tube, which closes a switch and tells the circuit board to go to step---2 Step 2 lights the glow plug and goes to step 3 automatically, Step 3, opens the gas valve and send in gas thru the long venturi tubes which lights from the glow plug and on the last tube, theres a rod that sticks into the flame, if no flame or not working properly, it will shut down the starting sequences and retry for 4-times and automaticaly lockout till unplug and start over. (whever step it stops at, then thats where your problem is!

My bosch 21E (infinity style) hot water system has an intermittant fault where the flame does not appear to be able to stay on (or properly light). Once water is started to the unit I can hear the ignitor...

moisture is getting into circuit board, usaully this sealed in a jell which keeps the board protected from any kind off dust, moisture etc which would comprimise the thinking side off the unit. a bosch engineer should be able to do a diagnostics on site.
