The use of rubber bands is at best foolish. Belts are still available for most models. If you can supply the model number, I will cross reference the belt size and post a supplier and cost.

Rubber bands are not quality controlled for proper sizing and will not keep a cassette at the proper speed. Quite often you wil hear variations in speed. Belts are still readily available for around $1-$2 depending on the belt. Any repair shop that uses rubber bands for repairs is not a quality shop IMO.

I have used rubber bands many of times and there has never been one to come back! and what do you think belts are made of ?

you could pay alot just to get the belt , if its available , and then if it breaks , you will be paying and waiting again. ( for nothing but a rubber band! )

my tape cassette has been running with a rubber band for 4 years!

so using a rubber band is NOT foolish!!! "abrsvcs"

and a bag of rubber bands are only about a $1 ! minus shipping and handling and a manufacturers cost!!!

just make sure that the tape players mechanisms and gears are lubricated adequately , and you should not have any problems!

Yes, a new belt can be installed. That might not be the only problem. The belt may have broken because there is an issue with that transport.

Fast forward works but play and rewind stop after 3 seconds on a panasonic boombox

You need to investigate the method they use for auto shut off. There could be another belt in the unit or the reel table drive of the right side known as take-up is not being driven sufficiently.

Sony HCD-GRX40AV Cassette Player Belt Layout Diagram Required

Hi , i have just spent half of yesterday trying to replace 4 belts in a sony twin player , you wont need a manual just take the cover off and remove the white plastic cover off the cassette unit at the front , after you remove this cover all will be revealed , my opinion is get a repair person to do it for you as it is really fiddly and time consuming plus you have to buy the right belts anyway , hope this helps ..
