Re: Gateway 510 X Desktop
Card or usb connector will both work. once you have installed the router software, you'll need to install the card software as well. the usb may also have software, but i don't have one so i'm not positive, but it's highly like;y in order to secure the network.
this should help guide you.

As long as the router has wireless antenna's on it or indicates it is a wireless model then all you need to do is turn on the wireless function of the router. You do this by access the router, open a web browser and try either http://192.168.0.1 or http://192.168.0.100 one of those should be your router. Log in and go to the wireless settings. There you can enable it and configure it.
From there, as long as your laptop has a wireless network card built in, it will see the wireless network and you can just connect to it...
If you're Bell sympatico is a wireless modem/router and your laptop has built in wireless on it you just need to connect to the wireless signal of the Bell sympatico then that should be the time you can access internet with the laptop, But if your Bell sympatico is only a plain DSL modem you need to get a wireless router that will share the internet to your laptop and desktop so you can roam in your house with your laptop here is a sample of wireless router Linksys WRT54G.
Is there a NIC in the Gateway? A place to plug in a cat 5 cable? If yes, there is your answer. You will need a place to plug in the other end ... if you dont have a router, you will need one. I recommend LinkSys routers though there are other brands.
If you have no NIC, get a PCI based NIC at the Big Box Store. They can tell you how to put it in or for a small fee, they will do it for you.
Okay, first things first. Look down in the lower right corner and look for the icon that shows wireless. Is the icon there ? If it is, then right click on it and choose view available wireless networks. Is yours there ? If so , click on it and go from there ?
If the icon isn't there, then right click on My network places and choose properties. From there, right click on the wireless network adapter and choose either repair, or disable. If you choose to disable, you will then need to re enable it. Now look for the icon in the corner, and follow the steps above.
Try that first ,and then repost if it helps or not. We'll go from there if it doesn't .
The easiest would be to connect your desktop straight to your modem and verify that you can connect to the Internet. Do not use the LinkSys WRT54GS yet. Pop in the CD that came with the WiFi Router and run the setup wizard. Follow exactly on screen instructions. Verify that your desktop's networking is set to auto obtain IP address.
Alternately, you can try: 1. connect your desktop with a straight through LAN cable to Ethernet Port #1 of the WRT54GS; 2. set your desktop to use IP-192.168.1.10, Subnet Mask-255.255.255.0, Default Gateway-192.168.1.1; 3. open a browser and goto 192.168.1.1. use the LinkSys supplied username and password; 4. verify/configure/set the LinkSys to your preference; 5. for the time being do not use any security keyphrase, WEP WPA or MAC filter; 6. verify that your laptops could see the router's SSID; 7. verify that all laptops are set to auto obtain IP addresses;
If for some reason neither method will not work, pls post back with your modem's make & model.
Hope this be of initial help/idea. Pls post back how things turned up or should you need additional information.
you will have to access the router by the ip address.
(192.168.??.??)once you log in, user name blank and password admin. you will have to set up wireless security. there are several ways and each that is selected has a brief tutorial.
Sometimes, people who are gamers or use Ipods, leave the router unsecure but limit the wireless access by mac address or by ip address so only those wireless devices gain access.
check that you have all updates for your linksys and cable modem and the new adapter you bought since your pc is old..
if that doesn't help then try the following:
i would shut down pc, uplug router power, turn off the cable modem and give it all at least 10-20 secs.. plug the other pc in the router then start up cable modem and router.. after that, then turn your pc on and see if it recognizes...
is the adapter for a desktop to make wireless of a laptop, just curious..
