I have the same problem. My freezer is not cold, but the refrigrator is cold. I have a GE side-by-side with water dispenser. I also have frost build up on the back wall

Same problem, here too. The upper portion of the freezer (around the icemaker) is barely cool and the lower portion (below the dispenser unit) seems to be working better. There is frost building up on the back of the interior of the freezer, mainly around the light. Help! We've given up on trying to get the icemaker to work.

Sounds like a defrost problem. Check to see if there is any frost buildup in the back wall of the freezer. If so, it is not defrosting as it should.
  • possible causes:
  1. bad defrost timer/control board
  2. bad defrost heater (in freezer)
  3. bad thermo switch in freezer
If you don’t know what these are then unplug the machine and let the ice melt in the freezer overnight with the door open. Then try it the next day, if is cooling fine then you need to have a service person replace one of the above items.
  • if you already checked this and think it is a different problem then let me know, i will help you figure it out.

these are the usual suspects.

heater in the back wall of the freezer:

thermal switch also in the back wall of the freezer

We have a model 58262 21.7 cu. fit with gal. door storage refrigerator. The problems began a few days ago when the freezer stopped making ice cubes. By today the freezer and the refrigerator ceased...

Defrost unit asap and then turn on. Remove all ice from evaporator and dry off.
If your defrost heater is not working ice will build up and the refrigerator will not cool properly. Just make sure that when you turn the unit on the compressor is running. If not then you might need a start relay/capacitor. Check this site for parts Sears Online In Store Shopping Appliances Clothing More

The GE Profile PDS22sfsarss is now 4 1/2 years old. One year ago, the temperature panel stopped working and a repair person told me to just order that circuit -- which I did and replaced it myself....

Not certain this will help your situation, but here is what I did to mine.

GE Profile Bottom-Freezer Refrigerator with Electronic controls with digital temperature readout (Should include Models PDS20MFS, PDS20SFS, PDS22MFS, PDS22SFS, PDS22MFS) May also apply to other models.

Diagnosis: Search of Internet yielded no definitive fix. It appeared to me that the some minor frost buildup might be symptomatic of unseen frost elsewhere. The electronic controls could possibly be messed up.

Fix: Not knowing whether it was frost or the electronic controls (or both), did the following:

1. Turned off the refrigerator. (It is not clear how to do that. Download the owner's manual for your model from the Internet. If it is like mine, the freezer and refrigerator APPEAR to have separate controls. In fact they are linked. To turn both freezer and refrigerator off, press the WARMER button on EITHER the refrigerator OR freezer until the display shows OFF for both the freezer and refrigerator.)

2. Unplugged the unit. Let it set for 18 hours with both doors open.

3. Plugged it in (which probably reset the electronic controls.)

4. Turned it on. To do so, I followed the instructions that said to press the COLDER button on either the refrigerator or freezer. Press the same COLDER button a second time and it should go to the factory presets of 0 degrees for the freezer and 37 degrees for the refrigerator.

5. Allowed the temperatures to stabilize for a week, after which temperature adjustments can be made.

Not recovering

Make sure the fan in the freezer is running circulating the air.
How to check everything

If the evaporator coils behind the back panel of the freezer are icing up because of auto defrost failure that will stop the circulation of cold air and eventually affect the freezer too.

check defrost timer, defrost heater, defrost thermostat. In most newer models the timer has been replaced by an electronic control board. If the heater and thermostat are ok it’ll be the control.

You can turn the defrost timer till it clicks and everything shuts down. The heater should now come on. If it does, replace the timer. If it doesn't, check the heater and defrost thermostat. Turn the timer again till everything starts back up to end the defrost cycle.

We have a Kenmore model 596.71864101 that is probably around 10 years old. The freezer is doing what it should but the refrigerator is not cooling. It did the same thing a few weeks ago, but suddenly...

There is a fan in the rear of the freezer that delivers cold air to the frig. Turn temp control down to make the freezer call for cold, the fan should also turn on, even if the door is open. This is an easy self install if it is the fan.
