By default, the screen it set to auto shutoff after 2 minutes. Just press any button to turn it back on. You can change the shutoff time by going to Menu > Settings > Sound & Display > (scroll down) Screen Timeout. Raising it will cost battery juice however.
The force close message comes from the application crashing. Are you using the default text messenger, or one from Android Market? The apps in Android market are developed by third party programmers and are often buggy.

a 6ya expert can help you resolve that issue over the phone in a minute or two.
best thing about this new service is that you are never placed on hold and get to talk to real repairmen in the US.
the service is completely free and covers almost anything you can think of (from cars to computers, handyman, and even drones).
click here to download the app (for users in the US for now) and get all the help you need.

Try downloading Txtract from the G1 Market. It's listed under "tools". Use this application to save the text messages you've been hoarding to your SD card, then delete the text messages from your phone. Your G1 will work like new again!
