Yes, of course you can do this with your own. The first things you should do are they:

You need to buy 1gb RAM which same socket to your old 512mb RAM. Be sure that the said RAM are compatible to your motherboard.

SOURCE: Upgrade NEC Versa VX

You can insert the Windows XP CD while logged on Win 98 and run a test from the CD. Obviously you need a larger Hard Disk and at least 126 MB RAM to bring XP to a usable speed. You can look for RAM upgrade options in this page.

SOURCE: how to fit ram

turn the laptop off and manually turn it over, there should be a screw covered panel on the bottom of the laptop, un screw the screws securing the panel, then check inside that there is a chip. Your probably going to find a 200pin chip there in one or two slots, that is your ram memory, just replace it with what ever type ram is corrrect for your computer.

SOURCE: How to update ram on NEC Versa M400?

I don't know what a NEC Versa M400 is, but i'm prosuming youve checked under the memory pannel on the bottom of the laptop? if the rams not under one of the pannels on the bottom then you will find it under the keyboad.then just release the 2 clips on either side of the chip & it will pop up. pull it out & put the new one in,you'll see they only go in one way.

Hmmm, something does not appear correct. The Crucial memory selector indicates that the Versa Premium will hold 2 256 MB DIMM for a total of 512 MB.

How to install saound card for NEC versa E6200 for

Hi,

First off that notebook is not Windows 7 capable. Here are the WIndows 7 requirements:
  • 1 gigahertz (GHz) or faster 32-bit (x86) or 64-bit (x64) processor
  • 1 gigabyte (GB) RAM (32-bit) or 2 GB RAM (64-bit)
  • 16 GB available hard disk space (32-bit) or 20 GB (64-bit)
  • DirectX 9 graphics device with WDDM 1.0 or higher driver.
But, if you want to add a PCMCIA Sound Card you can do that. Just google PCMCIA Sound Card and you'll find a ton that are available.
I might suggest a new laptop.

Thanks Mark

Was given a second-hand versa LX..

Get a copy and install windows 2000 professional with the service pack 4, the most XP-compatible OS. You'll need 256MB of RAM minimum for everyday/internet use or it will run slowly.
Then install your normal apps, firefox, MSN Messenger (V7.5, not LIVE), office 2003, etc.
Some MS apps (Like office 2007, MSN Live messenger) will ***** about not having XP, just install an older version.

How to upgrade memory

The NEC Versa m500e has 2 memory slots. Each slot can hold DDR PC2700 with a maximum of 512MB per slot.

I'm not sure where the memory is located on the Versa, but normally in the middle on the bottom of the laptop there is a memory slot. on some units the memory is located under the keyboard, so you have to remove this first to change the memory.

Hope this helps
