Question about Kenmore 24032\24036 Top Load Washer

Empty washer tub wobbles during spining, plus burning smell

After replacing the broken Direct Drive Coupling with a new set from Sears Parts (P/N 285753A), I smelled the rubber burning when test run my Kenmore 90 Series washer about 4-5 minutes in the wash cycle. I removed clothes and drained the water, re-opened the cabinet, switched washer to run a couple different cycles by cheating the lid switch. Everything look normal except the burning smell kept coming and the empty washer tub wobbles during spinning.

Does anyone know what could be the burning smell source? And why the empty tub wobbles at spinning? All the balance?? springs under tub seem normal to me. The instruction from jsrock516 below is what I have used for installation reference, which is very helpful.

Thanks in advance for helps.

Hi, JR JR, thanks for your quick
response and suggestions. I am going to check the three suspension pads, see if
the pads worn out causing the wobble. However, "I believe" the tub was not
wobbling much prior to replacing the drive coupling. Do you know whether
suspension/skid pads likely??/unlikely?? to be the source of smell rubber
    burning?

Another post online (2005Aug07) described a similar smell
burning problem as my washer, but it didn't mention their final result/fix for
    some reason(s)?

Won"t spin or agitate. Makes a loud rattling noise

If this is a Whirlpool manufactured TOP LOADER (such as Roper, Estate, Kenmore, Amana, and Frigidaire), you may have a damaged or broken motor coupling. Whirlpool manufactured top loading washers use a motor coupling between the drive motor and gearcase (transmission) in place of a drive belt. This configuration is known as "direct-drive". The coupling can break through normal wear and tear. Washing frequent loads of heavy items and reduce the life span of the coupler. Common symptoms include the following:

1. No spin or agitation.
2. Washer will fill and empty.
3. Drive motor still runs.
4. Strange rattling, grinding or clicking noise during agitation or spin cycles as the drum sits still.

If your washer is exhibiting these symptoms, then its probably a safe bet that the motor coupling is bad.

The following link explains how to replace one:

The part number for a replacement motor coupling is inlcuded in the link I provided. Replacements can be purchased at any of the following websites:

searspartsdirect.com
appliancepartspros.com
pcappliancerepair.com
repairclinic.com

All these sites are reputable and offer great service with competitive pricing, so shop and compare. The first three sites I have listed also included helpful exploded view parts illustrations to assist you with locating and properly identifying any parts you may need.

If you have any questions, please post back with your complete MODEL NUMBER (located on a nameplate along the wash tub rim under the lid) and let me know. I hope this helps you.

MACHINE STOPPED - BURNING SMELL COMING FROM WASHER

The burning smell is from your coupling and when this breaks the rubber spins across the plastic face of the opposite coupling. Your washer will not wash or spin until this is replaced. fortunately these are cheap and easy to replace. Refer to my step by step instructions to replace yours.
Here is the guide:

Ge washer top load wlse4000goww not washing/spinning only pumps

Hi,
Your type of washer usually has a belt theat runs the agitator and spins the tub. The pump is hooked by a direct coupling. If you are still pumping that tells me the motor works but the belt is probably broken or worn so badly that it no longer drives.
Have the belt replaced or do a search for "appliance parts" and then enter your model number. You will get a parts menu to order a new belt from for your unit.
Belt replacement for some of these units can be a major chore... then again some are relatively easy, but consider yourself warned if it is a real project....

I hope that this will help you to solve your problem!

Thanks for using Fixya!!

Kenmore series 90 washing machine clunking and burning smell

First, see the Sears parts site for your washer:

http://www.searspartsdirect.com/partsdirect/getModel!retrieve.pd?pop=true&modelNumber=110.26902691

See the section on the Machine Base.

There are a number of balance springs and vibration pads that help keep the tub from vibrating and going out of balance.

It's possible that one or more of these is broken, loose or damaged.

Following is a description of how to remove the cabinet to get access to them.

http://www.american-appliance.com/catalog/newsdesk_info.php?newsPath=16&newsdesk_id=135

Also see the Whirlpool Service Manual for their direct drive washers.

https://secured.whirlpool.com/Service/SrvTechAdm.nsf/2cd44500d572193285256a45004fd9d6/f7e2147fa98b28cf85257122007475cb/$FILE/L-55.pdf

For the vibration, I'd check the springs and vibration pads.

While you have the cabinet off, I'd pull the pump and motor and check the Motor Coupler. This could be the cause of the "burning smell"

Stopped with a full tub, burn smell. Direct drive

Carefully check your symptoms. The problem you are having could be a motor coupling, or a lid switch malfunction.

If the washer will fill, will not agitate or spin, but will STILL drain, these are the symptoms of a broken motor coupling. This is a very simple and inexpensive repair. The following link explains step-by-step how to replace one:

http://www.fixya.com/support/r385252-replacing_motor_coupling_whirlpool_top

The part number is included in the link I provided. You can purchase a replacement on line at appliancepartspros.com for about $11.

If the washer fills and agitates, but stops at the rinse cycle, or, if the washer fills and then stops, this is a common symptom of a lid switch malfunction. The washer usually will NOT drain if there is a lid switch malfunction. The following link explains how to access and/or replace one:

http://www.fixya.com/support/r385198-replacing_lid_switch

The lid switch is usually mounted under the washer top casing, on the right hand side on most top load models. It is activated by a plastic piece on the lid (called a "Lid Strike") through a small hole on the rim of the wash tub opening. In many cases the lid strike breaks off the lid, or the lid switch becomes loose and no longer makes contact. Inspect the lid to make sure the lid strike is still intact, and then inspect the mounting screws (adjacent to the small opening on the wash tub rim) and make sure they are snug.

On some models, the lid switch is located under the top casing by one of the lid hinges. You will know if you if you have this type of switch, because It does not have a lid strike and the small hole on the right hand side of the wash tub will not be present. This switch is actuated (toggled) by a rod on the lid hinge. With this type of switch, if you locate it and it can be toggled by hand, you may only need to adjust the actuator by bending it slightly.

A replacement lid switch can be purchased for about $20 - $30.

If you have questions please post back with your complete model number, so that I may be able to provide yo with better assistance. I hope you find this information helpful.

Washer does not agitates

Sounds like you've already replaced your lid switch and now the washer stopped agitating and spinning, but WILL still drain water. If I'm understanding these symptoms correctly, these are common symptoms of a broken motor coupling. The burning rubber smell is another symptom as the coupler has a rubber bushing that can tears apart when the coupler breaks. There may also be a strange rattling noise associated with these symptoms too. The coupling is located between the drive motor and gearcase (transmission) and this is what transfers the energy from the drive motor to drive the transmission, which makes the drum spin and agitate. It is common for this coupling to wear out, strip, or break over a period of time. This is a very inexpensive replacement part (usually $15 or less) and can be replaced easily by the average do-it-yourselfer with a little guidance. The following link gives you step-by-step instructions how:

http://www.fixya.com/support/r385250-replacing_motor_coupling_kenmore_top

Some of the orginal motor couplings that came from the manufacturer were totally made of plastic. Over a period of time (especially with heavy loads) the center shaft on the coupling would strip out and the coupler would free spin. The manufacturer came out with a new improved, longer life coupling with a steel grommet. The link provides you with the new part number and where you can order the part if you wish go online. If you do not wish to order from the website, take the part number provided and go to your nearest appliance parts retailer. This is a common part they carry. I hope this helps you. If you require addtional assistance, please contact me and let me know.
