I have an automatic 1997 Ford ranger problems putting into gear.

My ford ranger doesn't drive when you put into drive nor reverse if you put it into reverse in order to put it into drive or reverse you have to put the gear inbetween Park and reverse and neutral and drive almost like everything is shifted over. IT still works and drives like put i have a fear more problem will arise been driving around with it like this for a half a year but only 1 mile too and from work.

As you are shifting you feel the lever snap into gear wich that is where that gear actualy is but you are seeing the indicator on the column is not on the chosen gear that means the indicator on the column needs some adjustment to match the indicator with the lever position

Anything from a bad cable adjustment-cable to a bad transmission. Make sure the fluid level is correct.

What would cause a 1998 ford ranger to die when you put it in drive but goes in reverse fine

Check if the you have an automatic gearbox for a steel and/or rubber pipe attached to the gearbox via a little vacuum unit. If this exists this pipe is connected to the inlet manifold, and supplies vacuum for the gearbox to select top gear in an automatic gear box. If this rubber and/or steel pipe is damaged or fallen off, repair or replace as necessary and then try again. If the vehicle has a manual gearbox, check the selector lever's, arms and or connectors. These can be rubbing on the vacuum pipes and may have split one of them.

2000 Ford ranger 3.0 L automatic granny will barley move in reverse but drives good in forward gears what would cause this?

My automatic granny doesn't move that fast either. It sounds as though your reverse gear is going out, the only thing I can suggest is taking it to a transmission repair shop... sorry =(

98 ford explorer will drive but you put in in reverse will not go

It is possible that the shift linkage is out of adjustment and is going into neutral and not making it to Reverse, try moving the gear selector slowly from park, through reverse to Neutral, and see if it will go into reverse somwhere in between. If this does not work ,you may have Reverse gear failure, a common problem with explorer/ranger transmissions. unfortunatly it requires rebuilding the transmission
