My garmin loses the satellite as soon as I turn on the engine.

It just started doing this...I've not added or changed anything to the vehicle. I even went out and purchased a new unit and it still does the same thing. It works fine up until I turn the car on...It does not matter if it is plugged in or not..it still loses satellite the moment i turn on the car.

I have heard of this before and it is said to be a power surge issue. Unplug the Garmin unit before starting your car's engine. If this does not work, you may have interference from the EMF (Electro-Magnetic Field) produced when you turn on your car. If so, there is not much you can do rather than just wait until it finds the satellites again.

My new Garmin Nuvi 1450 lost satellite signal more than 30 times between Topeka Ks and KCI. Is this normal?

I have the same exact problem. Satellite detection outside of vehicle before starting out was full strength, as soon as you get into vehicle strength drops off to practically nothing. Now start driving and it continually loses satellite reception even on the open road with no hills and a clear day. It was mounted as far into the front windshield as I could get it and still crappy reception. Very disappointing as a cheaper Tom Tom my sister has works flawlessly. Also my daughters HTC desire Z cell phone GPS works flawlessly even from the back seats in the van. Maybe 1450LMT is just junk, and I should look for a refund.

No satellite signal

Some vehicles have a coating in the windshield that can interfere with the GPS unit receiving the satellite signal. It is not the unit's fault. You may need to purchase an external antenna to allow your unit to work inside your vehicle. These are available at www.garmin.com or at your local GPS retailer.

Frequently loses satellites.

I can help you fix the satellite problem with your Garmin Nuvi 265WT.

Poor satellite reception, loosing satellites, and taking a long time to acquire satellites are issues that have been addressed by Nuvi 265WT firmware updates.

There are three steps to take to get your Nuvi 265WT running better than new:

  1. Back up your Favorites.
  2. Perform a Hard Reset.
  3. Download and then run Garmin 265WT WebUpdater to replace its firmware / system software.

I hope that helps.

Aquiring satellites

Are you outside with a clear view of the sky? It should find satellites once the unit is turned on. Does it say "Looking for satellites" or "Acquiring satellites"?

If it is "looking for satellites" then it means that the unit have lost all data (time, date, location). If it is "acquiring satellites" then it have date and time, but not location.

Looking for satellites require a longer setup time (could be as much as 15 minutes). Acquiring satellites is much faster (not more than 2 minutes).

Date and time is updated from satellites once the unit gets a satellite lock.
