Question about Garmin nuvi 200W GPS Receiver

Garmin 255 misdirects me

New Garmin 255 told me to make a U-turn in middle of major DC area bridge...not possible (or safe)! Also, my street ends at major Alexandria road 100-feet from my house, but Garmin tells me to take ''my street name'' for 3.6 miles to my daughter's school. ??????

Losing confidence in garbled Garmin.

Hi, I have a Nuvi 255 (205 series) gps, three years old. Last week the screen went blank, came back grey with 'crosshairs' and a black dot in the middle indicating 'press here'. I did so and the dot moved...

Graham - what your describing sounds like you somehow managed to erase the street level maps and POIs in your Nuvi.

If you connect the GPS to the computer with your USB cable, you should at the contents of the Nuvi directories and find a file called GMAPPROM.IMG or GMAPSUPP.IMG. These are the street level map files. Generally, these are found in the root directory of the Nuvi - or if yours has / and you use a memory card slot for maps - find it in the /GARMIN directory. GMAPPROM.IMG is the name of the first map set and GMAPSUPP.IMG is the name of the supplementary or second map set (if you purchased & installed one). You will likely have only one of these files - and may be named either. The size of this file depends on the area and age of the map. Current maps of the entire US run over 1 GB in size. If you do not have any maps named GMAPPROM or GMAPSUPP, you will not see any street level maps.

Something happened to delete the maps. Garmin will probably NOT provide free replacement maps for you, unless under warranty. If the devices is trashing maps and other files, you probably want to replace the unit under warranty or not. Garmin will, upon return of your old Nuvi - replace it with a factory refurbished unit with the latest maps installed, for $79. You can take advantage of this service by following this link to Garmin Service.

I hope this helps and good luck! Please rate my reply. Thank you.

How do I upgrade the maps on my Garmin nuvi 255?

Hook up your nuvi to the computer and surf to the Garmin website. They will have the latest upgrade - but they're not free! Read all about the maps you'd like to install for possible issues/bugs (we call them undocumented features). Be prepared with your credit card if you like what you see. Good luck!

Garmin 255 needs updating. How is this task perfomed?

Hello,

The GPS units do not have a complete POI database that would include some of the Camps you are interested in. It is up to the camps to make sure they are in the systems. You can suppliment your POI's with free data from online sources such as my favorite www.poifriend.com

As for the roads you probably need an update. to ensure a road is in the next update please report the missing data to Navteq (www.navteq.com).

You can update your nuvi regularly using the new Garmin Lifetime map update subscription sold by GPS City.

Does garmin 255 w speak street names?

Yes it does. You will hear turn by turn instructions only when you have the unit set (Where to) to go to a destination.

Does the garmin nuvi 255W speak street names

I had the same problem with my nuvi 255w. Called tech support at Garmin and they told me one of the voices under Tools, Settings, Language, Voice has to end in a persons name. I had British English selected and it did not speak street names. When I selected Austrailian Englich - Karen, the street names all work fine.

Need a map-street update

All that is necessary to do is to connect to the Garmin web site at http://www.garmin.com and register your GPS on their site. After you are properly registered then all you will need to do is go to the support tab and then you can update your map. Let us know if you have any problems.

Thanks for using Fixya.com

I have a Nuvi 255. It does not speak street names

Did you select Text To Speech (TTS) one?  If the voice doesn't have (TTS) it won't speak street names.

Garmin 255W solution

I have a Garmin as well and as we speak, I am at our vacation house which is essentially in the middle of no where (but its gulf front so the lack of even a BP is worth it!). I had a similar problem on the way here and there are a few reasons I know that will cause it:

1. If there was recent construction on that road (you have an older, not ancient, just older gps unit) then the maps are slightly out of date. try going to garmin.com and getting the most recent update.

2. I know for a fact that in heavy urban areas (or the rural sort), there are tons of problems with this sort of thing. Its just a matter of basing their maps on faulty databases.

The only real suggestion I have is that you update the software from garmin.com

Hope this helps and have a good night!

Garmin Nuvi 350 not recognizing some major streets

Sure enough it was the zoom. If it is a very small street, you have to zoom in to be able to see that you're driving on a road. Thanks for the help!
