I got a MTD tiller with an unknown history. It appears to be in good shape, but it won't run. I sprayed starting fluid in the carburator and it would run then it would stop. I also put a little bit of gas in the carburator and it would run for about 30 seconds or less then it would stop. It has gas in it (maybe old) in the tank. I bought this tiller at a yard sale and don't know anything about it other then it has be sitting for a long time in a garage. Will I need to rebuild the craburator and if so, how do I know what rebuild kit to get?
Thanks
David
I had the same problem a few years back. Check the rubber elbow coming from the gas tank to the carb, it's probably cracked and sucking air instead of fuel from the tank.
WHAT I FIND WITH THIS AND ALL OF GAS POWERED TOOLS IS THE GAS GOES BAD CAUSING THE JETS AND NEEDLE VALVES AND FLOATS(if any) TO LOCK UP OR BE BLOCKED . CARB. CLEANER IT THE FIRST TRY IF THAT DON'T DO IT I TAKE APART THE CARB AND CLEAN IT. PUTTING FUEL STABELIZER IS A MUST FOR ANY GAS SITTING FOR LONGER THAN 3 MONTHS AS THE OCTANE GOES DOWN TO AN UNUSABLE GRADE. REGARDS, PAUL
Check the tank and gas lines. May need cleaning. Sounds like it's just not getting gas to the carb. I've had the little needle valve in the bowl get stuck and not let more gas in.

Same problem, Mine runs as long as starting fluid is sprayed in the breather... then it dies.
I tore the carburetor apart on repairing a neighbors The diaphragm has holes in it so it's not able to get fluid to the carburetor and replacing the carburetor since you can't buy to my knowledge and replacement diaphragm for a carburetor gaskets air cleaner spark plug was about 30 bucks
