Question about Canon CanoScan 5000F Flatbed Scanner
Installed MS XP then downloaded driver for 5000f photo/film scanner now i get this error
Normal 0 Cannot scan for these reasons:
-The original may not be set correctly.
-The Film Adaptor Unit Protectiv Sheet may be put in place.
- The lamp may not be warmed up.
(It needs a few minutes for adjusting lamp on low temperature.)
Scanner driver will be closed
the negative is in the black tray and the white cover has been removed from the light

SOURCE: how do i scan film on my scanner
You should be able to download the manual.
To scan film, you'll need to first remove the white cover on the underside of the scanner lid. That is where the backlight is. Also, you must be using the ScanGear driver and NOT the WIA driver. The WIA driver does not support film scanning. Locate your film guides. These are the templates that will hold the film and are placed on the scanner glass to be scanned. Lastly, there should be a Select Source option in the scanner driver that allows you to select Film as the source.
Hope this helps.

You stated that you tried to install it on a new computer correct? To install any hardware on a computer you need a driver which is compatable with the version of windows that you have. If you have an install disk , it may install but still be the wrong driver. Even if it is the correct driver. Drivrs are updated ongoingly because their are problems with communication for the device to the computer.
Download the latest drivers for your version of windows, aftwer deleting the software/driver that is installed now.

You have to remove the white protective sheet from the the lid. Once you remove it you will be able to scan film. Also make sure the lock button is not in the lock position.
Open the Canoscan Toolbox.
Click the Save option.
Put a check in the box that states "Display the Scanner Driver".
Click the Advanced Mode tab.
Make sure Select Source is set to "Platen".
Click the Preview button at the top left
Another thing is this can be caused by a faulty FAU cable. One or more of the eight wires within this cable has fractured
