SOURCE: WD Passport Essential 160gb with PowerBook G4

The problem is that your powerbook G4 does not provide enough power to your 160gb passport HD. This does not happens to the new Macs with intel inside.
There are several ways to fix it:
1) Go to West Digital Website and buy a "Power Buster Cable USB" (that connect your 2 USB ports to your passport HD in order to provide more power). I think that it costs 10$. This is the link: http://www.wdc.com/en/products/accessories.asp?ProdID=170
2) The other solution is easier. If you have an external USB hard drive with two USB ports, or a DVD/CD burner with two usb ports, you can pug your passport in one of the ports while the other HD or DVD/CD burner is connected to you PowerBook. You will be able to see and use your q60gb Passport HD.

SOURCE: doesn't show any files and folders when drive opened

Congrats, You got a nice virus. Its better you backup your drivers and data from ur root partition format it. reinstall your operating system and install avg 8.5 before browsing any of the other partition. I can surely tell u your task manager, registry editor or show hide folder won't be working. There is no permanent solution to this other than format. But beware don't browse other partition before installing avg 8.5. Your earlier installed antivir has given its way to virus its of no use. You won't be able to install antivirus or visit any malware removal virus site. welcome back.

My passport essential SE 1 TB is full. How do I free up space on it so I can start backing up again

If the drive is full then you have to delete stuff to free up the space.
You can remove all but the latest backup.

Hi , I just copied my hard drives to my new Passport Essentials SE using the WD Smartware software, I do not like I have to manually switch between my two internal hard drives to back up so I would like to...

As far as I remember WD just copies the software into the PassPort drives and you don't have to install anything you can just run the software from the drive. If that is still the case then first take a backup of that software (basically copy that software folder to some place in your internal drives) then format the drive (make sure you select NTFS as the file system for the drive when formatting).
Formatting will erase all the files in the drive so make sure you have backup of you personal files also.
Formatting also resets the drive back to factory setting (if you want the WD software back then just copy it from the backup to the PassPort drive).

I overvolt the drive with the wrong adapter for my book essential and now the light keeps blinking. what should i do? can i retrieve back the files?

First of all, all external hard drivers are actually hard drive themselves, they're only outside your computer. you can still retrieve your files using the conventional way by removing the hard drive and connecting it to your computer. If your not comfortable doing this then have someone open the computer and the external hard drive for you. Usually if you'll drain the flea power, this is done by removing the adapter from the wall outlet while the device is on, will somehow correct the problem. If not then the power supply regulator is damaged and you will need to replace it. You can still use the hard drive that's inside you My Book Essential device only if you still want that hard drive to act as your back up then you will need a hard drive enclosure. you can buy this from any computer shop.

Hey there. I have a problem with an external harddrive. "My Passport Essential". When I connect it to my compute sometimes nothing happens and sometimes "Local Disk (E:)" shows up in my...

The problem might be a loose connection or bad configuration file (an autostart ini file that makes the hard-drive do certain things when plugged in) in the root folder of your hard drive. Are you able to connect to it sometime or it doesn't work at all? If you can read it, try backing up all your data and format the hard drive and copy back the backup again. But remember to copy only the needed files and not the system or ini files.

Passport essential, how do I recover the backed up files? I can't get them to open, don't know how.

If you used the WD software, I would recommend installing it on the destination computer if it's not already installed. Once the software is installed you will want to look for the retrieve tab. You normally have an option to retrieve all data to original directores, or you can manually select/choose the data you would like to recover.

Can I use my passport essential 2.0 to backup my work computer as well as my home computer?

You can use your WD Passport to sychronize data on multiple computers, you just need to set up the other computer name (e.g. "Work computer")using the software.

WARNING: Do not think that theyourWD Passport, using the WD Sync software, is a
backup drive; it is NOT !

As per the documentation with this device:
"synchronization software is intended to synchronize the data from a
computer to the drive (WD Passport) and SHOULD NOT be used as backup
software. To use this software properly, we advise that you do not wipe or
erase the data from the internal hard drive (computer) and resynchronize, as
this will cause the data that WD Sync stored to the Passport to be deleted."

This is why you are hearing so many people saying that they are deleting the
WD Sync software, reformatting, and using the WC Passport as a true backup
drive where you can actually see the files that you are backing up, rather
than a bunch of unrecognizable sync files that likely don't have all the files that you thought you "backed up".
