Toshiba Satellite M45-S265 Periodic Freezing, resumes, clock stop

Hello all. I have a Toshiba Satellite M45-S265 notebook that is approximately 2.5 years old. The computer has suddenly started freezing periodically while in use. Sometimes the "freeze" will last for 2-3 seconds, sometimes for a minute. However it always resumes as if nothing happened. No program errors, dialog boxes, etc. However I noticed this evening that the system clock is also stopping during these freezes. The time on the system clock was correct earlier this evening but I noticed that after a couple of hours of use and 15-20 freezes that the clock was about 5 minutes behind the actual time. Is this a hardware or software issue? Any ideas? Thanks!

Thanks for the reply. The fan appears to be running properly from what I can tell.

Try to run defrag and scandisk.

This may be a overheating issue. Check to see if the fan is operating when the unit frezzes.

Re-seat your RAMs. Or, you may have a bad one or two. If you have two, remove one and try the install again. If it fails again, remove the current one and try the other.

Probably a broken power jack inside the machine - really common problem on laptops. You can expect $100-$180 to fix depending on where you take it.

Get a recommendation from someone if you go to a local place - lots of shoddy shops are around,

Usb to serial controller?!?!

Try removing (uninstalling) the driver in the Device Manager. Then download the chipset drivers and run the install. It should identify the correct driver automatically.
