Question about Canon PowerShot S1 IS Digital Camera
Problem just started. When you power-up a Canon S1 IS (in shoot mode) you can look through view-finder or rear LCD and "see" what you are aiming at. No longer for me. The display (either LCD or view-finder) shows the "Information View" as described on page 24 of users manual. These are the various icons which show compression, resolution, shooting mode, flash mode, etc. These little icons located at the top and bottom of the display. In the middle of the display is a small rectangle (defined by white lines). Problem repeats each time it is powered up. Batteries are good. Took them out. Replaced them. Powered back on several times. Still the same problem. Seemingly no way to get out of this strange "mode". It "takes" pictures, but they playback blank.
I had exactly the same problem and I was very frustrated. Then I learned that Canon published a Service Notice in October 2006? : the CCD Image Sensor on some Canon cameras becomes defective. Canon says they will repair it free of charge for repairs and for shipping if your problem is indeed caused by a malfunctioning CCD sensor, even if it is out of warranty. I called them at 1-800-828-4040. I was offered 2 options.
Option #1): send it in for repairs. (If the CCD isn't the problem, they will repair it at a charge of at least $140.)
Options #2) except an offer for a newer camera (the SD 890 IS) at a greatly reduced price + shipping.
I chose Option #2. Good Luck.
