Question about Philips DVP642 DVD Player

There is a DVD in the player that wont eject or play.

The power button just blinks when plugged in, and i can't get the DVD out or to do anything like play. I got it in 2005 and has worked perfect until suddenly stuck.

There was no pin sized hole.

  • simsseth Nov 30, 2008

Does anyone know where a reset button might be, or how to loosen the "clutch" it has on the DVD in the player. I have the top off the unit.

Sorry about the "inappropriate" thing, I'm new. There are no chemicals or bursting.

I have the same problem, there are no pinholes to use like on computer drives; i took off the cover and still there is nothing i can find to push or pull or hit that would make the disk eject.

nothing has burst. cannot find reset button. What now?

I have the exact same problem: DVD disc in player will not eject. Tried cycling the power as per the manual instructions and got no results.

Called Philips support line and they offer a 1-year warranty. If your player is older than 1 year, you're out of luck and they have no time for you. They also have no solution for recycling the DVD players and rely on local recyclers, at consumer cost and initiative.

After this very poor experience I would recommend very highly against purchasing anything from Philips in the future.

Instead of a pinhole, there is a slot on the bottom of the DVD player that will force the disc out. There's a plastic lever visible on one side of the slot. I used a butter knife to push into the slot.

Look for a pin-sized hole on the front panel.  If you find one, use an unfolded paperclip to push into it. Many optical drives provide this for just your situation.
They use a friction clutch (for safety) that eventually doesn't function right anymore.
The blinking light may be telling your that the power supply hasn't come up as it should which could also affect the eject operation.

Despite the unwarranted 'Inappropriate' rating that is normally reserved for off-topic or obscene postings, I will suggest that you look for part using the guide below since you have removed the case.
If anyone here responds when trying to help you and fails, then 'Thanks for trying' is the proper response.

Check toward the back of the unit where components seem larger and perhaps you can identify a transformer, probably of the ferrite-core variety. THis will be the power supply section.
Look at the cylindrical components with markings on them such as 'uF.' These are electrolytic capacitors.
Defective ones will often burst at their tops or deposit chemicals around their bases.
If you see any that appear this way, they will need replacement although they may not be the only failed components.
Capacitors are not expensive but replacing them carelessly can damage the traces on the board and require a decent soldering iron, quality solder and some solder wick to absorb solder around suspect parts and let you remove the old components.

If you do choose to try this repair, be advised that this type of capacitor is polarized so the newe parts must be installed with the leads oriented as were the original + & - markings.

My dvd player is stuck on one dvd and wont let me eject, change disc, or even stop the current dvd. display reads "locked" whenever i press any buttons. can only turn on and off the device.

Hi, For some reason the disk will not play. You push the eject button over and over again, but the disk slot will not open. Here's one solution...
* 1 Turn off the DVD player. Wait a few minutes, turn the DVD player back on, and
then press the "eject" button. If this does not work, turn it off and unplug
the DVD player...while you keep pushing EJECT button plug the DVD and turn it on (your hand still on the eject..) is should come out..
* 2 ..if it does not eject , unplug the DVD player again, Remove the screws off DVD on the sides and take off the DVD casing.
* 3 Look for the DVD holder inside the DVD player. This device holds the DVD in
place while the DVD player reads the disk.
* 4 Push the stuck DVD disk toward the front of the DVD player until the DVD
ejects. Remember the DVD player is not on and some force ( gentle ! ) must be applied.
* 5 While it is open, plug it on and place a DVD disc just to see if mechanism works properly..
* 6 Replace the casing and the screws. Plug the player in and turn it on. Put
another DVD in to test whether the player is finally working ..
Hope this helps!..
Take care and please

Dvd won't play or eject

If you want to get the dvd out
you can try this:
First turn of you dvd player at the mains, Then power it up, But the moment it powers up press the eject button a few times so it doesn't start to load. If it doesn't work the first time try it one more time since you may not get the hang of it at first.
then you dvd should eject.
With dvd players like this, corrupt, copied or really scratched dvds may make your dvd player do this.

Dvd eject button does not respond

Had a similar problem after loading a suspect dvd (one I had buned myself) Could not do anything - stuck at loading.
Try this :
  1. Unplug and wait 10 seconds
  2. plug it back in and wait 1 minute. DO NOT PRESS ANY BUTTONS!
  3. With the machine still in the standby state, press eject on the REMOTE. It should eject without trying to read the disk.

Good luck. It worked for me.

Had a similar problem after loading a suspect dvd (one I had burned myself) Could not do anything - stuck at loading. Don't remember if the fan was running. From what I have read these units are touchy to bad disks (DVD or HDD) If yours has a DVD inserted try this :
  1. Unplug and wait 10 seconds
  2. plug it back in and wait 1 minute. DO NOT PRESS ANY BUTTONS!
  3. With the machine still in the standby state, press eject on the REMOTE. It should eject without trying to read the disk.

DVD Drawer / VHS Eject button

My 1st suggestion is to pull the AC power plug from the wall, wait 5 minutes (have a smoke or a coffee) and plug it back in.
Then retry the functions that are giving you grief.
Report back with the results and we'll go from there.

** Please re-comment if the suggestion did not work for you, there may be several other possibilities.
