Question about Philips 28PW9536 28" TV

1 Answer

Blue tint and lines on screen.

I have a Philips PW9527 CRT set which is about four years old. Recently, it has developed thin blue lines across the screen about half an inch apart which get closer together near to the top of the screen. These lines are across the full width of the screen except for across the middle where they start about an inch in from the sides. Also, the picture has a decidedly blue cast to it with blacks looking navy. I have adjusted the colour, contrast and brightness which doesn't help. The tint setting is set to normal and I have tried turning off all the picture enhancement features as well as disconnecting all peripheral devices. There are no speakers close by or any other electrical equipment. Any suggestions very gratefully received!

To add to my initial post, here is a photo of the problem. Hopefully you can see the lines and the background should be black!

Many thanks henlopen! I have since been back to the shop who sold me the set and they weren't too sure what the problem was. They tried to suggest a new 'painter' chip at over £300! Presumably this chip contains the video driver circuits that you mentioned. It sounds expensive and probably terminal - either a new tube or a new chip. Uneconomical to repair either way. The voltages should be set correctly as I have owned the set since new and the back has never been off.

Thanks again for the advice - it is very much appreciated.

Good advice, Bill. Sounds like a repair would be a waste of money. I think you're right about the tube being on the way out as it is very flat as well as blue. The shop did say that the 'painter chip' was a common problem on Philips TVs. I think I will have a look at the new Toshiba LCD sets. I haven't had much luck with Phiilps or Hitachi in the past and I hear mixed reports on Sony so maybe I will get lucky with Toshiba.

Thanks again, Bill. Great to hear from you. You obviously know your stuff!

    Kind regards

Those lines sound like "retrace lines" and several things can cause them. The most common are shorts inside the picture tube and shorted semiconductors in the video driver circuits. They can also be seen if the blue screen voltage is too high or if someone has tampered with the screen voltage control.

Usually those Video IC's go out due to intermitent shorts inside the picture tube, so if you did go ahead with a new "painter chip" it would probably not be a lasting repair. I have seen this problem with Philips and Zenith sets before with some newer Sonys exibiting the same problem also. Something to keep in mind when searching for a new TV. Thanks for the good words!

Phillips tv has red tint across screen

This brand is known for getting discolored CRT cooling fluid in the blue and green CRTs. At 10 years old, it's almost for sure .. unless never used. A bit expensive repair. Don't attempt this yourself unless you're both a TV tech and a transmission mechanic ,, LOL.

I believe from your description that the vertical circuit has failed. either the IC or a capacitor. Sorry, but being only a 13" set I don`t recommend you repair it. unless you have a friend that would do it for you for the cost of the parts only.

LN-T4665F 46 in. LCD- Black Line across screen

The set is under a year old and is under warranty. The LVDS cable inside these sets have a history of coming loose. The problem could be the panel. Either way, the set is the problem and needs to be looked at. This set is worked on in the home and does not need to be taken to a shop, so, you can still use it. Contact Samsung at: 1-800-SAMSUNG Hope this helps.
