I have the Kenmore cannister progressive model#11629812991. When I turn it to carpet to clean, it doesn't change. In the past when this has happened I just take it apart and clean the hair out. This time it still won't work and the overload reset button doesn't work either. Also the powermate Jr. has not worked for about a year. Help!!!

Re: won't work for carpet
You could have a bad switch in the handle on the hose, may also be that the female plug at the end of the handle has broken loose inside and has gotten pushed in to far for the male connector on the want to reach it and cannot make a good connection. The switch and wire hartness come together when you order it. If the plug broke loose, you can either glue it to the tube or replace the tube.

I had a vacuum cleaner that did the same thing. My vacuum had three suction levels. The noise level would decrease as I lowered the level. I also noticed that when I turned the vacuum off the sound didn't stop instantly, it wound down/faded off as the motor slowed down. I found the problem to be the bearings in the main motor. I've been told that the motor that powers the carpet brushes can also make the sound if the motor bearing fails.
Apparently there may be a fuse in the canister itself, I have no instructions for getting to it though. There's another post on here you might want to check, perhaps that person can tell you how to get to it
Check the plug ends at the top of the wand and the plug going into the hose handle, also at the bottom of the wand. It sounds like they may be burnt, if so they will need to be replaced. One cause of these connections going bad is not turning the power head off when connecting or disconnecting. Therre are other causes, the switch in the handle is going bad, also some of these cannisters have a relay mounted by the vac motor, sometimes they go bad.
Could be a number of things, cord may be bad as well as a problem with the motor. There also is a fuse that could have blown. If you go to sears.com, click on parts, put in your model number, when the page loads, click on the first link and you will have a parts list, and scroll down there will be a parts break-down picture that you can look at. You can also order parts thru the Sears website.
