I would suggest if you haven't done so alreay is replace the projection lamp. The symptom you are describing indicates a failing lamp. The lamp part number will be located on a orange and white sticker on the side and it will say LAMP CODE and will start with a number of BP96-. If the sticker is missing then you will have to remove the lamp from the TV and get the number off of the cage of it. Please take a moment to rate my answer. Thanks....
On the DLP televisions, if the color wheel is defective the lamp won't start up. First thing to check is if you are getting some kind of arcing noise in the lamp area. If you do hear an arc then suspect the lamp is bad first even though it physically doesn't look bad. The color wheel is part number BP96-00250A and is very common to fail on these older models. The lamp varies so that you will find an orange and white sticker on the side of the TV with a lamp code such as BP96-00224J, that is your lamp part number. Please take a few moments and rate my answer. Thanks..
It could be the temp sensor going bad. This sensor sits on top of the
metal housing which the bulb assembly slides into. The bulb assembly
will have a hole on top and this is where the sensor is above. There is a
small blue and white wire that plugs into it. If you pull the wire out
and put a paper clip or wire in the coupling you will basically bypass
the sensor connecting the blue and white wire. If your tv turns on then
that is your problem. Its cheap too. Here were my symptoms..1] Turn tv
on 2] Bulb would light up..(which eliminates the ballast) regular
picture would show up (which eliminates the bulb and color wheel) 3] 30
seconds later tv would shut down with 3 flashing lights. After bypass
the tv turned on as always and hasnt shut down yet. Always un plug tv
first. Get the replacement part to avoid overheating and possible fire
