Movies on my recorded discs freeze after a few minutes of play
I have an Emerson DVD/VCR Recorder Combo EWR20V5 that I had used for several months not realizing there was a problem. I usually watch the movies I record and then label and put the disc away for watching again another time. Last week I recorded one that I did not have the time to watch. When I went to watch it, it played for about 27 minutes and then froze. It would not play, rewind, or fast forward. Then only button that would work was stop. I ejected it and tried again and it did the same thing. I tried some of the other discs I had made and they all did the same thing, although they froze at different times; each within a 25 to 40 minute time period of play. I use the -R 8x discs that are to be used with this machine according to the manual and followed the directions exactly. They recorded to disc perfectly according to the screen, titled perfectly and finalized perfectly. They just won't play all the way through. What could be the problem?
Re: movies on my recorded discs freeze after a few...
Sometimes this unit gets "confused" - not sure why -- but try first using a CD cleaning disk and let it start and stop a couple times (sometimes lens gets dirty and does this) - if that doesn't help then try unplugging unit and leave unplugged (from wall socket) for about 30min then plug in, set local time and then see if the disks play okay - sometimes this "resets system"

Jan 17, 2009 I posted this Jan 3, 2009 and seem to have a solution. Similar problem. E4 54037380 Can not record on this disc. Even though it is from the same package of DVD-Rs that I have successfully recorded to previously. Contacted them about 9 months ago without a successful resolution so I am trying again. Unit will play any DVDs, will record and play back DVD-RWs but will not record on my imation DVD-Rs 8X discs that worked fine in the past. Starts to record for a few seconds and then the error message appears (sometimes with slightly different final 4 digits of error number). Other postings have suggested: maybe a firmware update is available (I requested and we will see Emerson's response), trying slower speed discs (I am skeptical since these 8x imation discs in this same package previously worked, and the instructions say 1-16x for DVD-Rs), unplugging the unit for 1/2 hour to reset the unit (did not work), playing the last disc recorded to the end and then trying a new disc (now it recorded for about 30 seconds rather than 10 seconds but then got E4 54043E02 error message, different but still did not work). So I am hoping for something more productive out of Emerson this time. Update Jan 17,2009. Bought a CD and DVD cleaner disc with the little brushes on it. Cleaned the EWR20V5 per the cleaner instructions and tried to recod on the imation DVD-R 8X that I had used successfully in the past, no luck, same error message. So I bought another brand, maxell DVD-R 4.7GB up to 16X and IT WORKED. The instructions on pg 25 say for DVD-R "up to 16X" may be used but "4X-8X disc is recommended". Go figure, no idea why the 16X worked but they did in this case. So just a suggestion to try other brands. Someone else had suggested that also so I gave it a shot. $8 of new discs and $13 for the cleaner and I've back in business.
you have to have a dvd RW that says write speed 1x -2x. this is an older dvd. most newer ones are 8-16x speed. Sony makes them and you can get them at most stores. you have to read the back.

Okay have had the same problem for 6 months, have bought 10 different brands and speeds of DVDs. Tried the reset idea, 5 times still no luck! I was so furstrated I was just going to buy me a new player.
Then I seen a laser lens cleaner, it was under $10 dollars at Wal mart. Came home reset the played 1st then tried the cleaning disc. I"M recording AGAIN and no error messages!
Try using 8x and lower DVDs and -R ones; try cleaning with CD cleaning disk and then try recording a few min again.
If that doesn't help try unplugging and waiting about 30min then put in disk that was previously recorded and go to last item and play it to end (if 2hr long skip to last skip and then play until it finishes) - now try just recording a few min using the manual DVD record button and see if error comes up again - usually this unplugging somehow resets everything. Hope this helps ya'll.
