Question about RCA D52W20 52" Rear Projection HDTV-Ready Television

1 Answer

Louding sparking in the back panel.

The television will work fine for about 30 minutes. Then after a while it will start popping and sparking in the far back bottom right corner. Turning the TV off will not fix it, you have to completely unplug it. If you leave it alone for couple of hours or the a whole day it will work for another 30 minutes. Im not sure but I think it is charging a capacitor and then discharging. Capacitor plates might be really close and arcing across or dust might be in there messing with the electronics.

More likely its the flyback arcing which is a common problem with the ITC222 chassis which is what your model is. You can get replacement 259296 flybacks at the following link with free detailed instructions with pictures so you can do the repair yourself.

Loud popping noise and spark coming from red projector

I would guess you have a High Voltage Leak at the Anode Lead Cap where it Mounts to the CRT. This is not a area to mess with You are better off calling a professional to fix it. It may be a little difficult to confirm if it is a intermittent problem.
Hope this helps,

On one minute then POP loud noise, burning smell

Loud popping and loss of power is common on plasma TVs and is usually either the Y sustain or Z sustain boards or buffers; in these instances the damaged part will be quite evident.

If this is an LCD you might have degraded insulation on one of the pink/blue backlight power leads causing high voltage to 'arc' to the chassis.

The loud bang and smell is actually to your advantage as in these circumstances the damaged part is usually evident. It'll just be a matter of popping the back off and sleuthing around. :)

Loud popping noise

The 23" CRT set may have a high voltage breakdown in the flyback transformer or focus divider. Take the back off and operate the set in a dark room. Look for anything that has a blue glow around it or sparks flying when the pop occurs. I won't guarantee this will find your problem, but it is definitive if you see these!

I once had a set with these symptoms. I stopped the blue glow and arcing by covering the focus divider with epoxy. It worked for a couple of months before the divider literally broke apart.

TV randomely turns off

it may just be a static buildup from the dust.
open the tv and blow it out with a air compressor.
if that doest not work then the circuit may be overloading.
remember it stores a charge for days.
