Why the white or black spot on LCD Display

Dead and Stuck Pixels
Pixel defects for an LCD monitor are defined as one of two types: dead or stuck. Technically, both types of pixel defects are stuck pixels but it really deals with the electrical currents and the state of each pixel or sub-pixel.
A dead pixel is defined as a pixel or set of sub-pixels that has failed and is permanently in the off position. This condition means that the pixel will not let any light through. This can be observed as a dark or black spot on a brightly colored or white background.
A stuck pixel is defined as a pixel or sub-pixel that has failed and is permanently in the on position. This can be either with a single or multiple sub-pixels for a given pixel and is best observed on a dark or black background. A white pixel means all three sub-pixels have failed while a green, red or blue pixel means one of the sub-pixels has failed.
Hope this helps, if so do rate the Tip

I've noticed a dark patch in the lower right corner of the screen. Is this a bad panel or backlight? It's mostly visible in scenes containing blues.

Sounds like a backlight is out probably due to a bad inverter board. If you can see the spot when the tv is off its probably a bad lcd panel.

I have a SONY 50in LCD and a light spot about 8in in diameter shows in the middle of the screen and is very noticable watching a black and white show

This is a bad light engine. Refer to a local technician for replacement cost and repair as this is not a cunsomer repair item

Chipped screen

Yes that is beyond what you want to spend. That is the LCD display. Depending on sizes they can start at $ 600.00 and go up to $ 3700.00. I just checked on your model and the LCD display will cost $960.00, that's the price of a new set.

Pink Spots on Display

I am not surprised that Sony would not admit that there are more problems with this model of their HD televisions.

I just had a service repair technician from an authorized Sony repair store examine the problem and he came to the same conclusion - the optic block needs to be replaced. Apparently it cannot be taken out and cleaned - it has to be replaced.

The estimated cost of the repair is approximately $1,400 Canadian dollars. I got a written estimate from the service technician and i will be writing Sony Canada a letter (and including a copy of the estimate) to ask them what they are going to do about this.
