Question about Bissell Lift-Off(R) Revolution(R) Turbo Upright Vacuum

Motor gets hot and stops running

My Bissell Turbo vacuum cleaner is 2-3 years old. While I was using it today the motor shut off (the light went out but the brush was still on). I examined it and noticed that there was nothing in the canister. Instead, the space around the filter above the canister was full. I emptied that and tried using it again. No luck. I felt the plastic in front of the motor and it felt warm. So I waited until it cooled and tried again. The motor came on and I resumed vacuuming. But after fewer than 5 minutes it shut down again. I can't get the job done this way. What to do?

Is there suction?

call bissell and do a walk through.. you have a clog somewhere and its killing that motor.. with the hose off (completely) the machine does it still have the problem? if no add a part. check again.. this machine is completely home serviceable..

Make sure all filters are clean, also check the inlet by the brush roll isn't clogged as well as the hose. If this is all ok, then there is a problem with the motor. There is a thermo protector that comes with the motor that could be bad.

You already said it, so check the carbon brushes. Once it is no longer able to push the rotor or stator it need to be replace. Carbon brushes are customized at the machine shop, so you should bring it so that you have a sample of the brushes itself. Just be observant when disassembling the motor so that you put it back to exact place.
Thanks for asking.

The motor overheats and shuts off. This annoying because it has done it at least 5 times today during normal vacuuming. It shuts off easily when you use the hose and canister to clean the steps or around...

Almost all vacuum cleaners have a thermal cut-out, which operates when the machine gets too hot and resets automatically when it cools down. Overheating is almost always caused by a blockage. Either the filters need cleaning or changing, or there's an obstruction somewhere in the pipe-work. Make sure there's good clear air flow and your problem should be solved. Good luck!

Probably a hose clog. Check the hose on the back of the cannister. Most likely clogged where it attaches to allow debris into the cannister. If cannister is not filling up, that's a sure sign. To remove from top of back of cannister, just turn the ring on the end of the hose to release. Take it outside and push a long thin object through it to force out the clogged hair or debris. The motor is designed to shut off the vacuum cleaner for 30 minutes when this happens to avoid burning up your motor.

If it is completely dead, then either a bad cord, switch, motor, or a broken connection, it will have to be taken apart to find the problem.

This the number for the brush roll motor, 2036757, is it the one you got? I don't remember having to remove the pulley, I am thinking that the pulley is on the new motor. The 8920 is a good number? Where you on the Bissell site, or some other site.
