Adding a second hard drive

I have just obtained a large Seagate SATA hard drive. I want to install it in a Dell Dimension 4550. The existing drive in this machine is parallel ATA. Can a SATA device be installed in the machine. If so, what additional cables, etc. do I need? Any tips for the installation?

Installed 1T seagate hard drive as an internal backup but copmuter ( Windows 7) does not recognize. what should I do?

I presume you set up this hard drive as the second hard drive. You can do these:
1. Disk Management (check if it is readable):
Control Panel, Administrative Tools, Computer Management (please run as administrator; right click it), Disk Management. Is this hard drive info exist in this screen? If it is, then the hard drive is not bad.

2. If necessary, test and fix it using Norton Utilities (download and run it):

you would have to removed the hard drive and possibly buy the external adaptor for your hard drive then plug it in to another computer via USB and reformat the hard drive..

I bought a 1T 7200 as a second drive. I was sold a sata cable only do i need a power cable also?

All SATA drives need a signal cable and a power cable, but usually these cables already exist inside your computer waiting for you to use provided that your motherboard allows for an additional drive.

Adding old hard drive to new pc!

the seagate HHD (secondary drive) need to be on the same cable as the primary HHD. unless you haev SATA. then it is need to be connected to the second SATA connector on the mother board.
go to BIOS setup and make sure the BIOS know there are 2 HHD.
you should be good to go.

You have to go online and search then download the drivers for preparing SATA laptop harddrives for installation of Windows XP otherwise during installation it will tell you there is no hard drive found.

you problem is most likely that your bios is out of date. download the latest bios updates for your motherboard and then when you install windows format you HDD with the ntfs system (using the long formatt system not the quick format). Then you should install the bios update. then your mboard shoud no longer have the problem of recognising your large capacity HDD. thanks

Hard drive installation

You should be able to install that drive. The biggest variable is if it is a SATA or PATA drive. This model was built for SATA drives, but I think you may be able to get a PATA drive to work with the right adapters.

For the step by stem directions see the link below. It will take you right to the Dell support page. Refer to the "Adding a Second Hard Drive" section.
