Question about Apple iBook G3 Clamshell (M2453B) Mac Notebook

1 Answer

What do I do next?

Good Afternoon, Mr. Monkey.

I am so thrilled that you were able to help me NOT throw away a perfectly good iBook.... but what do i do now? Am I supposed to send you money?
I clicked a box that said I would pay 15 dollars, but I don't know how to follow through on this.

Sorry to seem so lame - I am ordinarily quite competent. :-)

Again, I do thank you.

I would recommend booting from USB. Go to pendrivelinux.com and pick a distro. The utility is awesome and makes it easy to boot from usb. make sure that bootusb is an option in BIOS.
Good luck

Machine 1. The dim display is likely the result of an old or failing compact fluorescent lamp (CFL), generally refered to as the backlight lamp. This CFL is a long, narrow, delicate, and normally very bright light that runs along the bottom of the LCD screen and is powered by the inverter. You could replace the CFL yourself however or simply look for a used iBook screen assembly or the LCD by itself for about the same cost. CFL sell for $7-15. The first time you attempt to replace it, you should buy two because you'll likely break the first one learning how it work. Watch out for mercury! Machine 2 The graphic processor unit (GPU) is attached to the logic board using a grid of solder balls. With normal wear and tear the logic board flexes and breaks and cracks the solder joints which results in the same exact symptoms that you are experiencing. The chip must me removed and the solder joints "re-balled" to fix it correctly. Again, you could do this yourself or find a reputable service on eBay for $30-55.
Sometimes, if you grip the iBook with your left hand and apply pressure just below the alt key with your thumb and your fingers on the bottom, while booting, the symptoms go temporarily appear to go away. It's a good way to test for this very common iBook problem.
Good luck!

Describe your cannot start ibook G3Problem it simply does not start, battery is ok and I have tried to take the battery away and back in its place, but nothing what can I do?

Make sure your iBook is plugged in to the wall. Hold down the power button for a few seconds. If that doesn't work, try holding down Command (the Apple key)-Option-P-R (hold all four keys down) and press the power button. Be sure to hold the power button for a few seconds whenever you turn it on.

If that doesn't work, try resetting the Power Management Unit (PMU). This is kind of a "last resort," according to Apple. Don't do this all the time.
  1. Reset the power manager by simultaneously pressing and then releasing Shift-Control-Option-Power on the keyboard. Do not press the fn (Function) key while using this combination of keystrokes.
  2. Wait 5 seconds.
  3. Press the Power button to restart the iBook computer.
If you have a very old iBook, you may have to unplug your iBook, remove the battery, and
  1. Press and release the reset button located above the Audio/Video port on the left side of the iBook (Dual USB) computer by inserting the end of a paper clip into the small hole and gently pressing the switch once.
  2. Wait 5 seconds.
  3. Reconnect the AC power adapter.
  4. Put the battery back in the computer.
  5. Press the Power button to restart the iBook computer.
(If it still doesn't start, do you hear the fans going?)

Good luck! Let us know if these steps solve your issue.

No, it's not a problem. The charging circuitry is designed to prevent overcharging. Go ahead and leave it plugged in.

My ibook g3 running slow

If you have the original Install CDs that came with the iBook put in Install Disk 1.
When the Menu Bar appears go to Disk Utility (under file manu). Choose your HD and look for the S.M.A.R.T. status. It should be Verified. Then choose Repair Permissions. After that is done choose Repair Disk.

If none of this works find the Hardware Test Disk and run that.

I'm sorry that you have an ibook g3 but it's good that you are new to mac, there is still time to change.
However, neither of these are the cause of your problem.
You'll need to give your computer the correct password for the "router" that you are trying to access.

Hi Tajjek,

Try booitng the Mac from the installation disc which was shipped with the machine, make sure to use the right disc( which was shipped with the machine). If the unit does not boots to the OS disc, then remove the internal hard drive and power on the machine if you get flashing question mark after start up boot chimme then it is issue with the internal hard drive. Please get backt to me with your observation if issue persists.
