As Nobarai stated above, never blow into the cartridges! Also alcohol can corrode. Nintendo recommends in the game manuals to clean the contacts using a more gentle household cleaner like Formula 409 or similar.

A newer pack will be able to use cheats on it.
You can clean ALL your packs AND your game deck by diluting:
A cup of water
and a capful of Rubbing Alcohol

Mix them together, then rub the solution over the contacts of the carts and the game deck with a Q-Tip.

I did this, and I have not needed to blow into the cartridges yet, even though it's been a good 9 months since I've cleaned them.

What does an expansion pack for the n64 do? what is its purpose? and are they interchangeable?

I will refer you to a page on Wikipedia that explains it -- but the simple explanation is that the Nintendo 64 Expansion Pack increases the RAM on the N64 from 4MB to 8MB. There were a few games with improved graphics and game play that REQUIRED the expansion pack.

Yes you can remove the Expansion Pak from one N64 and put it into another. However, your N64 will NOT work without either the Expansion Pak or the Jumper Pak in that slot. The original memory card that came in there was called the Jumper Pak which was 4MB. The Expansion Pak was 8MB.

Can't play StarCraft - what kind of pack do we need and where do it go in the system

The rumble pak is optional, all it does is shake the controller during gameplay. The expansion pak is required to play the game. It increases the Ram inside the console to 8MB. Some games its is optional, While others it is required.
Donkey Kong 64, Perfect Dark, Starcraft 64, The Legend of Zelda: Majora's Mask all require it for all the feature to be accessable. There may be other games that use it but they do not require it for the most part

Its most likely the controller. When you put in the pack is it loose? You could try cleaning the GB game and trying again.

Kirby 64 won't hold a save file

The battery inside the game pak has died, thus, it can no longer hold a save.
Buy a special screwdriver for n64 Game Paks. Unscrew the casing, then find the battery inside the Pak. Take it (the battery) to any store that sells watches, then ask for a replacement for that battery. Plug the batery (+ side facing you) in the Pak, then screw it back together.

Your game should now save. :)

N64 game Pak

It's not too hard, remove the "Do not remove" sticker first. Then take a flat head screwdriver and put it in the notch where the cover clicked in on the top and just pop it out. Here is a guide with pictures (although they have the official tool, a screw driver works just fine.) http://www.nintendo.com/consumer/systems/nintendo64/hook_expansionpak.jsp

Nintendo 64 expansion pak

Barb3: The Jumper Pack (JP) is a bypass for the expansion cartridge. You were supposed to turn off the equipment remove the JP and then use the expansion cartridge. Your N64 Ram it's probably gone for good. Is either replace the RAM, which is hard to find or replace the N64. Sorry for that.... SithPitt
