Xerox Workcentre XD100 Accordion Jam After A Few Copies

Hello everyone, here is an interesting twist to a common XD100 problem. I get the fuser-related accordion jam, but it happens after one or two succesful copies from a cold machine. It seems like once the machine is heated up, I get the jam. The fuser roller gear is completely intact: no breaks, no missing teeth, no problems to see at all. Anyone have any ideas, or am I going to have to shell out $200 for a new fuser? Thanks!

Thanks so much for your help! I took the fuser apart to clean the roller, etc., and discovered that the fuser roller gear was indeed in need of replacement. The the problem was that the little tab on the inside of the gear--the one that fits down into the slot in the fuser roller--had worn down, so the gear was slipping. I got the gear today from www.partsdrop.com and after a little difficulty getting the fuser assembly back together--and after a couple of hiccups--my XD100 is again working perfectly! Thanks again!

What is most likely happening is the pressure and heat roller bearings and bushings are very gummed up.
When you remove a the fuser when its cold, try turning the heat roller gear, I would assume it is very very tight to spin.
What you can do it take the fuser apart, soak the pressure ( soft roller) roll bearings in some alcohol and then clean the heat roll ( aluminium) roller bushings and the end of the heat roll. Make sure you lubricate with some silicon lube the ends where the pressure roll mounts into the small holes in the nip fingers. That should help.
You can call a business called , ( you can google, The Parts Drop) and talk to Britt there. I am pretty sure he has the bearings for that machine. I don't work there, just have done business with them for years and they are top knotch.
You probably want to replace the gear also. Sometimes it can look really good, but be worn just enough to cause a problem.
Make sure you take a real good look at the condition of the rollers before you spend money replacing small parts, so that you don't wind up replacing 40 or so dollars worth of parts only to find out you do need the entire fuser.

Good. I had forgotten that that tab can wear in my post.

Glad it worked. That fuser can try ones patience.

I have a Xerox XD100 black and white copier and it is showing J1 on the display. Wondering what is wrong with it?

J1 is the toner cartridge. Needs to be replaced, printer will not print with a cartridge that is empty.

You can try resetting the Workcentre. Power on, hit "C" then the far left button back and forth 4 times, then enter 14 (like you were going to make 14 copies) hit print. Should clear the code. But if the cartridge is empty the code will return,

You need to use a IEEE-1284 Compliant parallel cable for this machine. A "changer" will not work, sorry.

Probably have a broken fuser drive gear. Very common. Try removing the fuser. Large gear on right (rear) end is probably broken.

See this thread, someone with a similar problem to you:
http://www.fixyourownprinter.com/forums/laser/24105

I'll summarize the solution:

The "software" H4 problem is quite common that Xerox has a resolution on its website

Solution: Perform a Fault Reset 14
Performing a Fault Reset 14 will reset your WorkCentre and will help to clear error codes.

1. Find the pink Clear button on the Control Panel of the WorkCentre.
2. Find the button below the word Auto.
3. Press these buttons in the following sequence: [Clear], [Auto], [Clear], [Auto]

NOTE: All of the lights on the Control Panel should go out and the LED Display should go blank. If the lights do not go out, then repeat step 3 until they do. It may be necessary to increase or decrease the pace of the [Clear], [Auto], [Clear], [Auto] sequence.

4. Press the [10's] key one time and the [1's] key four times to enter '14' in the LED Display, as if you were to make 14 copies.
5. Press the green [Start] button.
6. Press the pink [Clear] button two times.
7. The WorkCentre should now warm up and come to ready.
8. If the above steps do not clear the error code, repeat steps 3 to 6 a second time.

H4 is a power failure code. To reset the error please press in the following order: CLR - AUTO - CLR - AUTO (this puts the unit in tech mode). Enter 14 (as if asking for 14 copies) Press "PRINT" Your unit should reset itself and start working.
