I have this same problem. I have bought new SD cards (three to be exact) because I had no idea what that meant or what to do about it. The new card will work for about four post transfer to computer recordings, then it reads 'card full'...annoying!

I have the same problem. I opened up the unit and it seems that a pin has broken off the SD card slot. I get a "No Card" error on start up and if I attempt to record. "Card Format Error" when trying to format. (I get a message saying "Card Protected" if I try to format the card with a lock enabled.)
I attached a couple of images of the SC card slot board.
Look close and you will see that pin 9 is missing.
I would be interested to know if another recorder is broken in a similar way.

SOURCE: zoom H4 recorder ver 1.30

Hi. Not sure you still are in need of a solution but since my machine was doing the same thing last night, and I was able to solve it, I thought I'd post anyway.
For my machine, which has a more current OS than yours (mine is 2.20 I believe), I was receiving the same message after transferring material onto the computer. What needed to happen was to reformat the card. If you press "menu", the click on "file" you should have an option to reformat the card. It worked for me and it now works.
Hope that helps!

SOURCE: can't connect the h4 handy recorder to a mac

If you are using a Mac running Leopard (Sys 10.5), you need to upgrade the H4  firmware from Zoom website
http://www.zoom.co.jp/english/download/software/h4.php

You will need an external SD card reader.
Good Luck

Why a low remain record time on zoom h1 handy recorder when .wav setting in use?

when you record in .wav format, the files ARE better quality, however, they are ALOT larger than a standard .mp3...if you can't tell the 'loss in quality', i would suggest to keep recording as .mp3...but if a .wav is preferred, then i would suggest upgrading the SD card. ..hope this helps.

I've bought a SDHC card 32 GB but Handy Recorder H4 do not recognize the card. I've tried to format it at the pc, but no way, the message is "no card"

Verify the device and card reader support SDHC. Try a 2g card and see if that works, typically anything 4g or larger is SDHC, older devices can not read such cards. It is quite possible that the card is bad.

Hello, i am having noise problems when i recording with my zoom h4 in mp3 format, the funny thing is that every thing is ok when i record in wav format, do you have any idea about what could be the...

MP3 is a compressed format so there MAY be some SLIGHT distortion in MP3. It should not be a significant level however. I would contact Zoom and get support from them regarding this problem.

My Zoom h4 has been struggling for a couple months now. Most of the time I get either an error message concerning the card or saying the card is full. Even when the card has been reformatted both on my pc...

Make sure the batteries are good... some people try to use re-chargeable batteries and because of their lower voltage they cause problems. First thing is to try new batteries.

Not gettin to rec.

Take out the memory card, there is a little switch on it. One position is protected which means you can't record or delete anything from it, the other position is normal where you can record to or delete from.
