Question about Sony KP-51WS500 51" Rear Projection Television

1 Answer

Colors no aligned

I have a Sony Projection TV Model# KP51WS500

I have noticed that over the last few weeks while watching a cable channel we loose focous. If I changed to a different channel (nondigital) it would look the same. If I changed to a HD channel it would look just fine. So while on the basic cable channel I hit the flash button and it fixes the problem.

Now every station and every input on the tv is out of alignment. Red, green and blue seperation. After pressing the flash button the picture does not get better.

I have also noticed blue rainbows going across the screen. After reading posts here I adjusted the blue voltage knob and cannot get rid of them.(this is not as big a deal to me as the color seperation)

Also after reading some more posts I have pulled the d and g boards and tested all the pico fuses.( 2 on the g board and 7 on the d board)

Both IC's are marked STK392-560 (b2f21)

Does it sound like just the IC's need to be replaced? or just adjusted in the convergence menu?

what does in big size and dry solder joints mean(joints w/ little to no solder). Thanks,

I have found the a site that sells the ic's and they offer stk392-560 & 570. Should I go with the 570 it is a little less expensive or should I stick with the 560.

I downloaded the service manual and tested all the resistors and they all seem to check out ok.

    Thanksfor your help

I have finally received the parts directly from Sony. $80 with tax and shipping. I replaced the 2 convergience IC's and while holding my breath turned on the tv. Holy ****, the picture looks great. Thank you very much for all your help.

While flipping channels using my cable box (connected through the digital hdmi (I think)) the colors turn from looking great to almost black and white. I was on a non hd / non digital channel. Then I changed to another non hd / non digital and it looks the same, I changed to a HD channel and the colors were fine.

Do you know what might cause this? I do not have any error code flashing on the front of the tv?

Hi Chin,
Please check faded color resistors (in big size) on D board and also check dry solder joints on D board.
If above seems OK then ICs STK-392-560 are suspected and needs to be replaced.
Let me know if you need further info.

Please perform Auto Channel Search from TV menu. TV will restore data of all available channels on cable. Hopefully this will resolve color / b-w problem.

Does the RCA TV model D52W20 have a digital tuner? or will I need a cable box to watch TV? At our location they just switched the signal. we just had a tube TV with the cable line in the back and up till...

Greetings Pete - No, your display is what is called HDTV ready, meaning it needs a separate tuner AKA set top box.

You need to get the cable box, plug in the component video cables into your TV (usually provided) and plug in audio cables and you're viewing HDTV. See below:

Sony model #kp51ws500. Common problems for screen appearing warped

Need more details about how the screen is appearing warped.

if you have color separation and distorted image (warped, bowed, etc), then your Convergence ICs have failed. It is very common on rear projections. The solution is to replace the STK chips, check fuses and the resistors next to the STK chips. Replace as necessary and re-align via the service menu. It is about a $300 repair at a tv service center. You will need the service manual if you decide to do this yourself.

Try This:
When you notice the symptons Use this simple test to verify.
Go to the users menu on the tv.
Look for the converge option probably under setup or video setting. Converge is short for convergence to align the red and blue colors to the green color.

If you cannot move the red either horizontal or vertical, then the STK chip has failed for red section.
If you cannot move the blue either horizontal or vertical, then the STK chip has failed for the blue section.

If you can move both in each direction then the problem is something else.

Note if one STK chip fails, you replace both regardless.

Note: The STK chips are black about 3 inches long and will be mounted against a large aluminum heat sink (metal fins). They have about 20 pins on them. I believe they are STK392-560s in that set.

You can get a replacement U board at the following link which is most likely the problem as the U board has all the input sources on it. Look under the Sony parts category for the U board. They have the one for your model
