Why does my HP C4480 say "carridge jam" and flash when there is no paper inside the machine and I've cleared the carriage to the left? I have to turn it off and back on to have it work again.

Paper has nothing to do with the carriage jam. Something is hindering free movement of the carriage back and forth. Check to see that the carriage moves freely, and there are now buildups of dirt or trash in the area. You may wish to reset the print cartridges to ensure they do not hang when moving.

The printer tells me there is a carriage jam. I have switched off, opened carriage door and there appears to be no jam but still printer won't work. Still says carriage jam and that cartridge cradle...

Phantom paper jam! This apprears to be a known problem. After spening hours on numrous restarts, I contacted HP support and they sent me a new (reconditioned) one under warranty. Now I only have problems with the software.

Hope this helps.

My printer quit printing. Carrag jam comes up on the screen when I try to print something out. There isn't anything jamming it. What can I do to fix it

Issue:

A 'Carriage Jam ' error message displays on the product control panel. The carriage, which holds the cartridges, stalls against the left side of the product. A paper jam might have occurred previously.

Detailed instructions fro resolving a carriage jam along with a video are available here:
