Question about Western Digital 320GB MyBook External USB 2.0 Hard Drive

MY BOOK 1 TERA is not responding, only one circle is on in blue

One of a sudden my hard drive is not responding. It is not recognized by any PC. When I turn it on, you can hear like 3 clicks two or three times. Regarding the the two blue circles you have in front, only one (the external circle) is on in blue. The other one is off. What can I do to fix it? Do I have any chance? I want to get my information there!

Hi and welcome to FixYa,

Initially, the clicking sound could possibly be the head slapping against its stop inside the actual hard drive. This would then indicate a hardware problem. You of course could try the external drive on another computer, verify that all connections are good & tight and allow the hard drive to rest for a while before trying it again. Worst case scenario is removing the hard drive from the enclosure and trying data recovery while that HD (hard drive) is attached physically/internally to a computer and not through USB interface.

Just a start, do postback how things turned up or should you need additional information. Good luck and Thank you for using FixYa.

The clicks you hear are the device trying to read the hard drive. It sounds like it has been damaged somehow. Try a hard boot. disconnect from power for at least a half hour and then plug it back in. Sometimes the device will reboot itself and work. If you are successful you need to seriously consider backing up your material and getting a new external hard drive. This one is about kapoot if not already. Good Luck

No it is damaged and you cant repair it .

Regarding the circles the hard drive is not working (not powering up)
So the inner circle is OFF

Check your warranty, if the drive clicks constantly then its a hardware fault or in some cases the powersupply may have failed if the drive uses one.

    Try
connecting your HD to another USB port. Using one port all the time
to connect and disconnect USB items a port can develop a range of files
associated with configuring the USB connection. Some of these files
might actually have been from your HD connected before, or some of
these configurations could be from other USB items you connect to this
port. Changing ports can often lead to an immediate good connection
simply because ther are no conflicting configuration files. If this
does not solve your problem, we can now entertain the next process to
    try.

    THIS
IS A BIG ONE. This is the last thing to do. Before you try this
process, please complete a full back up of your system. This is
important as the next step can have side effects you did not entirely
expect. AND Second, you might need your XP Install Disk (not in all
cases). What this process is about is renewing all hardware/software
    configurations relating to USB connections.

    Here is what you do:
    1. Right click MY COMPUTER
    2. Select PROPERTIES
    3. Select HARDWARE
    4. Select DEVICE MANAGER
    5. Select UNIVERSAL SERIAL BUS CONTROLLERS
    6. Right click on each USB CONTROLLER and select Uninstall
    7. Uninstall all entries
    8. Reboot your computer
    9. As your computer re-boots it will reinstall all USB connections it detects

THEN, when all other USB items have been configured and connected by the system, you then should try connecting your USB HD.

    If
these suggestions are implemented and you are still have connection
difficulties with your computer, there are several other things to try.
If you have another XP Computer you should try connecting your HD
to another computer to see if the problem is a HD problem or not.
If it still has this problem with the next computer, it is a
    fault of the HD

IF YOU HAVE COMPLETED ALL the above
mentioned and still have a problem, you should next get this repaired or replaced.

If you have windows vista, same steps are to be followed.

I have a 1TB LaCie 2Big Quadra. It has 2 500GB and runs on RAID 1. I replaced both 500 GB LaCie drives with 1.5 TB LaCie drives, but my computer only recognizes the original 500 GB. I formatted both...

I have the same problem too on my 2big form lacie . If I use 2x 1,5 tera disk in "fast mode" or in "big mode" my disk manager only shows 746 gigs available (it should be at least 2,5 terra).
If I use "safe mode" so my system can see 1,3 tera available, wich is normal for a raid mirror configuration.
I hope to find a solution quickly.

External HDD no longer recognized by new win7 PC

Probably not the right answer for your problem. Mine is an external 1 TB Simple Drive. Mine wouldn't respond at all. I unplugged the power cable from the back of the hard drive and replugged it in and instantly it worked. I had tried rebooting the computer, plugging/unplugging over and over into the computer and that didn't work.

My computer doesn't recognize the WD book

Hello,

Several things can be done. You can try DIY software, assuming you have enough free space on your computer and it's a minor failure this may work.

Second, the enclosure itself may be failing, you can try moving the drive into a new enclosure, to do this take the drive to a PC shop and ask the technicians to test the hard drive in a new enclosure. If the drive works in the new enclosure you're set, if not move on to the next step.

Finally if you don't want the risks of the DIY method and the new enclosure fails, reply back with your location(Country, State and City) and I will be happy to refer you to a pro near you who can assist you with the process of recovering your files.

Hope this helps FixYa,

Chris

You may be able to remove the hard drive manually and try another USB adapter to access it on your computer.

Might be pootched though.

Rule of thumb is to never save your files to only 1 source. Its not a question of if a hard drive is going to fail but WHEN.

There are 2 things you can try:
  1. Go to My Computer and click on Tools/Map Network Drive and try to assign a new drive letter to the external; if successful, you should be able to access the drive; if unsuccessful:
  2. Click on the link below and install the program (it's freeware) Run the program and it will recover all "lost data" even on the external drive. After recovering the data, you may need to reformat the drive to make it workable on your machine again.

I cannot copy files FROM my Western Digital 500GB

Hi,

Check the file system of your hard drive. If your PC is recognizing it, check if its a FAT or NTFS. If it is NTFS then you have to reformat it using your Mac and choose FAT. Mac OS recognizes NTFS as a read only drive. If you plan using it with your PC and MAC you should format it using your mac and choose MS-DOS in disc Utility. You cannot format the drive using your PC Computer with a FAT file system because of the capacity. Only Mac can format it with a FAT file system.

Wd my book device usb device not recognized by computer

Hi, Take the drive to a pc store and ask the techs to move the HDD into a new shell and test it for you. Most likely it's ok and you can just buy a new shell/enclosure for it. If that doesn't work it may need the help of a recovery pro. If that's the case comment back here with your country/state/city and I'll pass on a recommendation for a nearby facility that can assist you in retrieving the files. Chris
