Re: I need to clean out my computer but keep WinXP.
Uninstall all the unwanted softwares
using the add/remove programmes.....
if you are suspicious about any viruses being there
i would suggest you to download and install 'Avast 8'
and run a boot time scan.this will clear all the viruses in your computer for sure
"tune up utilities"
to detect the unused registery entries and delete them (it has a one click miantainance)
you can get both the softwares for free( only trial) from www.download.com
i am tellling all this considering you do not want to part with the CURRENT windows xp
or do not have a Windows onstallation disc

The problem maybe caused by a part of the old OS still on the hard drive you would need to completely wipe out the hard drive and to do this u would need to get a kill disk which wipes thhe hard drive clean of all files that may still be on the computer to make it hang
Surgically removing is teeedious
Leaving just the os and driversJust find your data folders and start purging but watch out ad remove programs can get sticky so with a backup you can dabble all you want.
ok to rare but try to make a two partitions , when you install xp shows an partition option , make one partitions to 40gb and the other 120 gb and try , yo can do this form windows but be sure that you have all your documents save like backup , many programs on line you can find on line for do this , just search in google, a program that i recomend is partition magic easy to use
Yes, you can upgrade from Win98 to WinXP. The minimum hard drive requirements for WinXP is 1.5GB and the minimum RAM requirement is 64MB. You will also need a CD ROM for the install. Now those are the minimum requirements so don't expect it to go very fast. If possible I would recommend you upgrade to Win2000. WinXP and Win2000 are almost identical. The minimum hard drive for Win2000 is 650MB and for RAM it is 64MB. So you could still use your 4GB hard drive and have plenty of room. You will need a CD ROM for the Win2000 also. Good luck if you have anymore questons let me know,

This situation leads me to believe that the CD or DVD drive is faulty,,or the install disc you are using is scratched or dirty. Try cleaning the disc and begin again. Another option is to take the hard drive out and using a 2.5 to 3.5 inch HD adapter ,,plug into a desktop PC as a slave. And copy your WinXp cd onto a partition on your laptop HD. Then using a Win98Se floppy boot disc you can access the winXP and install from there.
