Question about HP LaserJet 5p Printer

1 Answer

Have to keep setting up HPLJ 5P on a USB port everytime I print!

Hello,
I have a HP LJ 5P that I have connected to my laptop via a USB to parellel converter cable. I installed the printer and added the drivers both form the XP CD as well as HP website but the issue persists.
When I install the printer, I have to select a USB port. It works fine as long as the laptop is not rebooted or the USB cable not disconnected. Once either of theses happens I have to remove the printer and readd it on a different port to get any more prints.
If anyone has any insights I would appreciate the help. Thanks

I've heard there is special software needed to do the USB to parallel conversion. We have a customer using a LJ 1000 with this hook up and there is supposed to be a driver/conversion software that handles the issue. Here is a good discussion that may have some solutions for you.

You don't write how exactly is your printer connected - if I remember correctly, HP LJ 4P doesn't have a USB connector, and Vostro doesn't have the parallel port available.
So how did you connect it? Is it via some USB to parallel adaptor, or via JetDirect network card in the printer? There are multiple separate issues that may be applicable in either case...

Vista will not print to HP Laserjet 5p

I purchased a Dynex USB to Parallel Converter Cable from Best Buy and tried to connect but had no success. I then sent an email to Dynex customer service and received a reply in about 24 hours. The rep provided spot on instructions which I was able to follow to a tee. My 14 year old HP Laserjet 5P is now ready to run until it blows up.

I spent hours searching web forums and only received overcomplicated replies by people who think they are techies, none of which worked. I am 63 years old and not a techie, so if I can do it, anyone can. I have saved the email and will forward this straightforward simple fix to anyone who needs it. My net cost was $36.00 for the cable.

Yes, you are correct in that you have to select the USB port from the driver in order for the printer to print to USB, or install another driver for the USB port.

Why is my printer showing a idle status and not printing?

Hello,

I believe the printer is connected via USB.
Check in device manager if the LJ 1020 printer is listed.
If yes, go to the driver properties > ports tab and Select the appropriate port for the printer

Alternatively, uninstall the full software and reinstall it again from

Does HP LJ 3055 printer scan over the wireless network?

Scan over wireless network is not supported with this printer. You can try set it up and get scanner to work with usb and then change port from usb to HP standard TCP/IP for the device, but I don't think it will work.
