My T40, when I turn it on, will not load anything onto the screen 90% of the time. When it does load up, it says there is a problem and asks if I want to boot in normal or safe mode. Either one I choose, it will begin to load Windows before it crashes. The computer continues to run, but nothing is visible on the screen. Also, I can still open and close the d: drive. I do not have a floppy on this computer. I was told that I needed a cd with a bootable operating system, but when I tried that, the screen did not load anything... the cd powered up, but nothing came up on the screen. Nothing has happened to the computer physically... it hasn't been dropped, no water spills, etc. I presume that there is a virus, but I need to get onto the computer to run a system cleaner and virus scan. Does anyone have any suggestions?

During the boot process you will see on the screen to press a certain key to enter setup Press and hold that key during the boot up process to enter BIOS the using arrow key scroll down to advanced bios features press enter change your first boot device to cd,press escape then press f10 to save to cmos to restart note this will erase you operating system you will have to have an operating system disk to load it onto you hard drive or create a partition to load another operating system (note after you have loaded the operating system you should go back andchange the first boot device to your failsafe or optimized defaults) after windows has loaded your computer will automatically restart it might restart 2 times one to finish the installation the next will be because the operating system is loaded and will boot from your cd during the boot process you will see on the screen to press a certain key to enter setup Press and hold that key during the boot up process to enter BIOS using the arrow keys load failsafe defaultsor load optimized defaults press escape then press f10 to save to cmos to restart hope this helps
Hi, Powering on the laptop after liquid spillage can damage the hardware (motherboard etc) due to electrical conductivity caused by the material (like salts) in the liquid. If such instance occurs, the laptop is supposed to be opened and cleaned thoroughly to remove any traces of liquid. So, it is recommended that you get it checked/ cleaned by a professional.ONLY if you are not comfortable with working
inside electronics, you can download the maintenance manual from the link given below and clean the laptop yourself, otherwise I suggest that you should get you laptop checked
by a professional for servicing. ThinkPad T40 Computer Hardware Maintenance Manual
Hope it helps! Good Luck! Thanks for using Fixya! CreativeTECH
Beeps usually mean there is a problem with your system hardware. 4 beeps usually mean a memory failure, but beep codes vary. Google "beep codes" to get a list of meanings. Lenovo Support has several pages for this. Try HERE
hehe...I used to have some problems and then came up with the solution to install other OS such as linux, lindows or anything else and then reinstal it with windows booting...and then it works, u can try it
Use IBM boot disc that was supplied with your computer. If that doesnt work use the operating system disc that came with it. If you have neither of those and the operating system was installed from the factory on a different sector of your hard drive try to start the computer up 3 times in a row and the computer should say safe boot or even boot from diagnostics etc. If you dont see any of that at all possible hard drive failure occured and you will be looking at gettting a new hard drive $50-$150 depending on size (newegg.com). Do you have the operating disc or not? if you dont then you will need to call IBM to see if they can send you a disc, if thats a no go then you will need to purchase one (newegg.com).
