Question about Black Box IP Address Translator With Bandwidth Management (LR0051A) Proxy Server

Open Question

I have an ovislink airlive WL5424 wireless router. The problem is that when I log in it used to have an IP address of 192.168.1.1 or 192.168.1.2, depending on how many computers were connected at the time. We only have 2 wireless computers and one XBOX 360 that connects directly into router(not wirelessly. The other day I tried to connect and IP address came up as 192.168.1.3 ..how is this possible. The wireless connections are password protected by the way.

The problem is ...I think someone else may be using my router....how do I found out who is connecting and at what time ....and if they are how do I stop them from doing so ?

  • Canatuna May 11, 2010

The router has an ip address too. It seems the default ip address is 192.168.1.1. From there it will distribute ip address via DHCP to everything connected to the router. Usually with a computer or xbox, or anything connected to the router, will usually always keep that ip address. The scheme the router gives its clients starts from 192.168.1.2 then .3 etc etc. What is the exact problem that your having?

SOURCE: wireless router

Every single user of the the Internet (Wide Area Network) and every member of an Intranet (Local Area Network) must be assigned an Internet Protocol (ip) address to communicate with other computers. Computer to computer connections are called 'ad hoc' and have cables or short-range wireless, like infrared media. Hubs are like splitters you might use to use one phone jack for two or more telephones. Switches and routers get intelligent control using a MAC address which is a fixed  firmware identity (unless cloned) to route packets of information. Do a Google search on the 'OSI Model' if you wish to learn how all this stuff turns 'ones' and 'zeros' which is all a computer knows into fancy web sites. ~Steve Medley

How to connect my self and make my IP address ?

you can set your laptop up to detect ip address automatically in its network settings. if you had provided the operating system it would have helped to narrow down how to do this. If you had told us how you plan to connect to the router this also would have been helpful. Are you connecting via blue cat5 ethernet cable or via wireless. If it is wireless your laptop should detect the wireless network and you can ask it to connect to it. If the wireless link is encrypted you need to log into the router via ethernet cable and look for the securirty settings on the wireless and find out what the encryption code is. Usually the router will use what is called an internal IP address range. the subnet is usually class c being 255.255.255.0 and the ip address default gateway IP address is usually either 10.0.0.1 or 198.168.0.1 and this can be put into the browser to log into the router. When you set the laptop to automatically obtain the IP address the Wireless Router has a DHCP server that manages the leases of IP addresses to computers connected to it. However if you are connecting the Wireless Router into an existing network with another router you will need to set the IP address to the next IP address eg 10.0.0.1 on existing router make second router 10.0.0.2> if you have a DCHP server on the wireless turn it off if you have a DCHP server on the existing router otherwise you have confusion as to which DHCP server to listen too on your network.Make sure the DHCP router does not allocate at least the first 10 addresses eg 10.0.0.1 to 10.0.0.10 to allow for the routers and printers on your network that may need dedicated IP addresses (Static IP addresses)

How do I determine actual threats to my network while reviewing my wireless/network Router's Event Log?

Logs are meant to see the activities handled by your router. However, to determine any threat you can check for the IP address of the devices you have connected to your router. You can determine if any one else is trying to access your router by their ip address only.
Note down the IP address for all the devices that you have connected to your router. Than match the your devices IP addresses with IP addresses you found in the logs.
Matching IP address: Means your devices accessing the router. Unmatched IP Address: Someone else's devices trying to access your router.
You can always add security by using WEP/WPA2 key security. For further security you can encrypt the keys.

How to remove network password?

Log into your router using a web browser and the router's IP address. You can find out your router's IP address with the ipconfig command on the Windows command prompt. The IP you are looking for is the Default Gateway.
Your router's default username is admin and the password is motorola.
Once logged into your router, you need to go into the Wireless section, go to the Security tab and select Open System from the Authentication field.

How can I find router I P address & password

Well it depends what ip address you are looking for - if you are looking for the local ip address all you have to do go is go to the command line and type in "ipconfig" without the quotes. What you are looking for is the gateway address.
If you are looking for the ip address the rest of the world sees it will be a little more tricky. The first thing you are going to want to do is log in to your router. You can do this by opening your web browser and in the address bar typing the local ip address of you router. (It should be 192.168.0.1)
You will be prompted with a log in box. The default username is admin and the default password is password. If you cannot log in using these credentials and do not remember if you have changed the password all you have to do is get a small pointy object (pen, paperclip, pin etc). Look on the back of your router for a small hole that says reset on it and push it in for 30 seconds. This will reset it to factory default settings - if you are wirelessly connected to your router you will have to reconnect to the network it will be called netgear most likely. You can then log in to your router.
Once logged into your router click on the "Maintenance" heading on the main screen then select "System Status"
Your IP address will be listed under the "Internet Port" heading.

I have problem with vaio vpcea3bfx, i cant connect to my wireless network @home, i dont know what to do?

You may sometimes need to connect to a wireless router locally to update its configuration. Accessing a wireless router's configuration screens requires you to know the router's IP address as well as the admin log in name and password. You should also be aware of a few common Wi-Fi connection problems and how to solve them.

Here's How:
  1. Verify the current local IP address of your router. Home broadband routers are manufactured to use a default address such as 192.168.0.1, 192.168.1.1, or 192.168.2.1.

  2. Verify your computer is connected to the router either via an Ethernet cable or wireless association with the router. In either case, ensure your computer possesses a valid IP address.

  3. Open a Web browser window and request a connection to the router using its local IP address. For example, type http://192.168.1.1/ in the browser's address bar to request a connection to a router using the IP address 192.168.1.1.

  4. If the browser request is successful, you will be connected to the router and prompted for the administrative log in (user-name and password) information. Enter the administrative log in information to authenticate yourself to use the router's admin screens. Broadband routers contain default user names and passwords when first installed. Consult your router's documentation if you need to know the default login information.

  5. If the browser request returns an error message, your computer is likely not connected to the router. You may need to perform additional troubleshooting to establish a connection. Try the following procedures and repeat step 3 above as needed to resolve any connection problems:
      a. Reboot (power off and on) your router
      b. Temporarily disable your network firewall
      c. Reset your router to factory defaults (consult the manufacturer's documentation)
Tips:
  1. If this is the first time you are connecting to a wireless router for admin work, consider using a wired Ethernet link rather than a Wi-Fi link. Your Ethernet connection will keep working even if you haven't finished configuring or accidentally break the Wi-Fi settings.

Need basic step-by-step instructions on how to install my router.

To Configure the Router with Internet Access
Connect to one of the wireless router/access point's LAN Ethernet ports, turn off its DHCP server, and give the wireless router a static IP on your LAN:
  1. Connect a PC directly to a LAN port on the wireless router with an Ethernet cable.
  2. Power on the wireless router/access point.
  3. Reboot the PC.
  4. Log in to the wireless router though a browser. (Usually 192.168.1.1, with User Name = admin and Password = password, unless you changed them from the defaults).
  5. Go to the LAN IP menu and disable the wireless access point’s DHCP server by unchecking Use router as DHCP server.
  6. Select LAN IP, and change the IP to 192.168.1.99.
  7. Click Apply to save the settings. You will lose the connection to the wireless router/access point , since its IP changed.
  8. Log in to the wireless router/access point with the URL: http://192.168.1.99
  9. Connect one of the wireless router's Local (LAN) ports to your existing network.
This completes the wireless router/access point configuration.
  • You can now log in to the wireless router/access point at its new address of http://192.168.1.99 and configure wireless features such as WEP and Access Control List
  • UPnP, DMZ, Port Forwarding, and Port Triggering are not used on the wireless router/access point, and it doesn't matter how they are configured.
  1. Configure the LAN IP address to be within the same subnet as your PCs.
    • Take care not to use an IP address already being used.
    • Limit the number of addresses in the DHCP range and assign an IP address outside of the range to the router you want to use as the Access Point.
  2. Disable DHCP on the wireless router/access point.
  3. Connect one of the LAN ports on the wireless router/access point to a LAN port on the Router.
  4. Configure the SSID and any security settings on the wireless PCs to match the wireless router/access point's SSID and security settings.
a. SSIDs must be the same on all wireless devices. (These are case-sensitive: netGEAR is not the same as NETGEAR.)
b. Tip: Make sure the wireless PCs can connect before configuring WEP, WPA-PSK, or other wireless encryption.

Cant access to my D-link wireless access point to creat a wep key..what i wana do?

1. Do not attempt to configure your wireless router with a wireless connection. If the wireless connection gets interrupted, you may (probably will) not be able to reconnect to the router.
2. Go to http://www.pingplotter.com/freeware.html
3. Download and install pingplotter. The free version.
4. Run ping plotter to determine the IP address of your router. Click on tucows.com and click on trace. Your router will be the FIRST IP address listed.
5. Write the IP address down. If it is not 192.168.0.1 someone has already configured the router.
6. Log in to your router using a wired connection with the IP address you wrote down. (if you cannot do this due to fthe router being pre-configured by your Internet Provider or other problems, you can force your router to reset to the factory defaults and configure it yourself.

6a. Use a straightened paper clip or similar object to force the router to reset itself to the factory defaults. Put the paper clip in the reset hole next to the WAN connector on the router and hold it for 10 seconds. This will force reset your router.
7. Remove the power from your router for at least five minutes. This will cause your IP to reset his connection to your router.
8. Log back in to your router using a wired connection.
9. The default D-link IP address is 192.168.0.1. The D-link default user name is admin. The password is blank. No NOT blank, just enter nothing but the user name and click on the next button.
10. You should be able to configure the router to your satisfaction.
11. Remember to change the Administrator log on information (name and password).
12. You may find it necessary to duplicate a MAC address in order to connect to your IP.

If your modem/router has a setup page, you may configure the MTU on it instead of configuring it on each computer. The modem/router's setup page can be accessed using the address 192.168.1.1 on the Internet Explorer's address bar or you may follow these steps.
1) Connect to the website integrated router by typing its IP address local (default: 192.168.1.1).
2) In the left menu, click on Show advanced Settings.
3) In section Hotel, please click WAN.
4) Please set the following parameters:
-- MRU = 1400
-- MTU = 1400
-- MSS = 1360
5) Click on Submit.
6) Click the Save Setting and Reboot and if necessary on Submit.

Wireless connection

JRSavage - The solution you supllied is to assign the IP address to the client. It appears Guest is asking how to log into the Router.

Guest - If the router is a wireless router then you should not have to know it's IP to connect to it, simply looks for it's SSID in WIndows Zero Config wireless util (or the util that came with your wireless adapter)

If you're connected and looking how to log into the router itself you'll want to enter the router's IP address into the address bar of your internet browser.

If you're looking for where you enter the router's IP for NIC configuration, you would enter the Router's IP as the Gateway address.
