before i did the above i did like the kids do and pressed every key in every combination i could. this gave me options to run diagnostics. An hour later this showed that it wasn,t a hardware problem because everything passed the tests. because i could see light at the end of the tunnel I searched the web and struck lucky!

Could you give a little more info; like what system do you have, when was the last time you saw (if at all) the comp. working and if you did see it working what exactly were you doing before it shut down?

Dell are brilliant! I eventually found out that dell include a recovery mode in their initial build/set up. This was in microsoft technical articles. Soon after turning the power on press ctrl and f11. This then activates the dell recovery mode even when nothing else will work. On the disc provided by dell when you buy your computer is a program called norton ghost. It was this that allowed windows to boot up properly. I returned the computer to its original settings. I still get a black screen on boot up stating diskette search error and have to use f1 to complete boot up. Microsoft offer a solution to by un checking the related programs on the start up menu by typing various run commands. This might work but I'm not going to do it because my son's computer now works and i'm not risking anything.

You can remove or change the Window's User or administrator's password and privileges. You need access to a computer with Internet access to download the Hiren's Boot CD and burn it onto a CD.
Then insert this CD into the laptop/computer and boot up the laptop-computer with the Hiren's CD and follow the instructions.
There are very useful utilities CD and it a Linux boot CD which contains quite a lot of Utility programs including a password removal program.

Wont recognise disk drive ide error

What you need to do is edit the BIOS so that the computer boots from the CD-ROM initially rather then the harddrive.

To do this follow these instructions:
1. Start the computer and tap the F2 key
2. You will now be in the computer BIOS, look for the option that says "Boot Sequence"
3. Highlight the option that shows your CD-ROM device and tap the "F5" key until it is the first one on the list
4. Hit the "Escape" key and select the option to "Exit & Save Changes".

If you restart your computer it should now boot from the CD-ROM. If you have any problems let me know and I will be more then happy to help you further troubleshoot!

My computer wont boot anymore

Try going into safe mode by hitting F8 upon startup. If it lets you get into safe mode then choose "Last Known Good Configuration" on the menu. If that does not work then let me know, there are a couple of other choices.

Computer will turn on but wont boot

OK, have you tried checking the connections on your hard drive, afterwards try rebooting. If it still wont boot i suggest you back up data and boot the restore CD that came with your PC. If it still doesn't work , check your BIOS, most BIOS programs have a hard drive auto detection function so if it doesn't show, chances are the problem would be a defective hard drive.

Hope this helps:)
