Question about Televison & Video
I hope someone can help me as I'm afraid that I'm out of my element.
I just purchased a new Samsung Plasma HDTV and love it. The problem is getting it to work with my sony slvd380p dvd/vhs combo player. I'm really only concerned about the DVD player part at this point.
I have what I think are called composite cables (red, white, yellow) that are used to connect the dvd player to another source - in my case the tv. I receive my tv signal through a coax cable and it goes directly into the tv. I don't have a dvr or any other type of converter box at this time. Sadly, for the life of me, I can't get the right configuration for these cables. Shouldn't the dvd play by matching up the cables to the same colors on the AV input on the back of the tv? I should clarify that I can get limited play ability but everything is in black and white and the dvd player remote does not seem to be working - can't get a set up screen and none of the remote functions are working. Is there something I can purchase for better compatability or should I just get a different dvd player? Thank you for any help you can provide.
a 6ya expert can help you resolve that issue over the phone in a minute or two.

If the new player you hooked up is causing the spit screen then you have to go into the set up menu in the DVD player and take it out of prograssive scan.. Its in the wrong fornmat for your TV set. good Luck PS please dont forget to rate this.

We also don't have a remote. We hooked a DVD/VCR combo to the Samsung combo by attaching the cable from the cable line to the DVD player and an additional cable from DVD to TV and it used to work but after we lost the control, the DVD can only be listened to but not seen. The VHS from the DVD player works perfectly though.
When we had the remote (before connecting the other combo) we used line-in to see a DVD or VHS using the yellow red and white cables from the Samsung to the other player.

When I hooked up my HD cable box using an HDMI cable, I had to go into the cable screen menus and select HDMI output. You may have to do something similar when using an S-video cable. Your DVD recorder doesn't seem to have an HDMI input, so you'll have to use the S-video or (worst case) composite video (red, white, yellow cords). Your cable box may also be scrambling the signal so that you can't record. That may be why you can record by bypassing the cable box.

While I could not find it in the manual, I found that you must
go to the menu, open Sound Options and set Speakers to "Fixed".
Note: If you turn off the Surround Sound or DVD player combination you must then go back to the menu and turn the speakers back to Televsion.
