Question about Kitchen Ranges

1 Answer

I have an electric range that is not functioning properly.  It has coil heating elements.  The two front burners are not working right.  While in use, the large coil will suddenly, on its own, become very very hot.  This does not happen all of the time but enough so that it is very dangerous to use that burner. The smaller front burner will sometimes not heat properly.  After being on for several minutes it will sometimes lose all heat.

The right front burner will not get hot. It is only warm never hot. The burner doesn't turn bright red even when tuned up on high.

hello, try changing that front element(burner)if its easily removable to another side that is working normal. If the element is still dull not heating or glowing normal then replace the element, but if it does, then there is something wrong with the front right element switch or the receptacle.

I originally posted this problem March 1, 2009 as Bodhi58 and recently had the problem fixed. It turned out the burner needed to be replaced as the wire was split in the burner. The part alone was $210 but the service charge.

Replacing a radiant element on a maytag glass top range I'm having strange problems with the two right elements of my MER5770 The front larger dual element will only operate at high heat. When turning on...

If the burner is scorched or pitted, go ahead and replace it. New burners can cost anywhere from $10 to $40. Otherwise, check the burner's electrical connections to make sure there is solid contact. Jiggle the burner in its socket. If it is loose, then remove the burner—most just pull out of the electrical socket, although some are mounted with a screw. (Always unplug the range before removing a burner.) Slightly spread the two terminals apart for a tighter connection. If it still doesn't work, then replace the faulty burner with a functioning burner of the same size. If that burner works, then replace the bad burner with a new one. If it doesn't, then inspect the electrical socket for damage. If it's charred, replace the socket. To do so, remove the screws that secure the socket to the range and then unscrew the range wires. Attach the wire connections of the new socket to the range wires and reassemble the burner.

Problem w/burners & lights after self clean

You may want to re-seat the right two cooking elements, in case there is poor electrical contact. When you have them removed, clean the contacts with denatured 91% alcohol and a Q-tip. The removal procedure follows.
First, unplug the range.
LIFT–UP PORCELAIN COOKTOP
To lift:  When cool, grasp the cooktop front
edge.  Gently lift up until the two support rods
snap into place.
To lower:  Hold the cooktop front edge and
carefully push back on each support rod to
release.  Then lower the top into place.
COIL ELEMENTS
➢When an element is on, it will cycle on
and off to maintain the heat setting.
➢Coil elements are self-cleaning. Do not
immerse in water.
To remove:  When cool, raise element.  Carefully pull out and away from receptacle.
Check them for damage. They do wear out.
To replace:  Insert element terminals into receptacle.  Guide the element into place. Press down on the outer edge of element until it sits level on drip bowl.
COIL ELEMENT SURFACE
➢ On Canadian models, the two front elements will not operate during self-clean.To prevent the risk of electric shock or fire, never line drip bowls with aluminum foil.

If that does work, you may have a faulty control panel. In that case, call Maytag at the number below.

Single Burner Doesn't Heat Properly

1. Turn off power. 2. Determine type of burner. If it's a plug-in, test faulty burner in another receptacle * If it works, replace the original receptacle * If it doesn't work, replace the burner. * Replace other faulty components If it's a flip-up burner: * Disassemble and replace the faulty burner and any other faulty parts. 3. Restore power. 4. Test. *If it still doesn't work, call a repairperson.
