Question about PC Desktops

My gateway g7-500 fails to start properly. Whemn power on I get a long beep followed by 2 short ones and the monitor screen remains black.

Cause:This issue can be caused by any of the below situations.

  1. New hardware conflicting with old hardware.
  2. Bad or failing hardware device.
  3. Connections not connected or connected properly.
  4. Recent electrical storm that caused a surge that damaged computer.
  5. Other hardware issue.
Answer:Warning: Some of the below steps recommend removing physical parts within the computer. While in the computer it is highly recommend that you be aware of ESD and its potential hazards. Information about ESD and proper grounding techniques are found on our ESD help page.
Note: Make sure your computer is turning on, if you press the power button and nothing happens (no lights, no sound, no fans, etc.) then this issue is not a NO POST but is an power related issue see document CH000312.
Remove new hardware If any new hardware has been recently added to the computer, remove that hardware to make sure it is not the cause of your issue. If after removing the new hardware your computer works it's likely the computer is either not compatible with the new hardware or a system setting needs to be changed to work with the new hardware device.
Disconnect external devices Remove everything from the back of the computer except the power cable. Turn on the computer and see if it beeps normally. If the computer has never beeped keep the monitor or display connected to see if any change occurs.
Identify beep code If you are receiving a sequence of beeps see our beep code page for a listing of different beep codes and their explanation and/or your motherboard or computer documentation. These beep codes are meant as a method of quickly identifying what computer component is failing or bad.
Check all fans Make sure all fans are running in the computer. If a fan has failed (especially the heat sink fan for the CPU) your computer could be overheating and/or detecting the fan failure causing the computer not to boot.
Check all cables Verify that all the cables are properly connected at that there are no loose cables by firmly pressing in each cable.
  • All disk drives should have a data cable and power cable connected to them.
  • Your power supply should have at least one cable going to the motherboard. Many motherboards may also have additional cables connected to them to supply power to the fans.
Disconnect all expansion cards If the above recommendations still have not resolved the irregular POST attempt to disconnect the Riser board (if applicable) and/or each of the expansion cards. If this resolves the issue or allows the computer to post connect one card at a time until you determine which card is causing the issue.
Disconnect all drives If you were unable to determine by the beep code what is failing or do not have a beep code disconnect the IDE, SATA, SCSI, or other data cables from the CD-ROM, hard drive, and floppy drive from the Motherboard.
If this resolves your irregular post or you now get an error message attempt to re-connect each device one at a time to determine which device and or cable is causing the issue. In some situations it can also be simply a loose cable connection that causes the issue.
Remove the RAM If you continue to to receive the same problem with all the above hardware removed attempt to disconnect the RAM from the Motherboard and turn on the computer. If the computer has a different beep code or if your computer was not beeping and is now beeping turn off your computer and try the below suggestions. Making sure to turn off the computer each time you're adding and removing the memory and then turning the computer back on to see if the suggestion resolves the issue.
  1. Re-insert the memory into the same slot.
  2. If you have more than one stick of memory remove all but one stick of memory, try rotating through each stick.
  3. Try one stick of memory in each slot.
If you're able to get the computer to boot with one or more of the sticks of memory it's likely you're dealing with some bad memory. Try to identify which stick of memory is bad and replace it.
If you're able to get memory to work in one slot but not another slot. You're motherboard is defective you can either workaround the issue by running the memory in a different slot or replace the motherboard.
Power cycle the computer In some situations a computer may have power related issues often caused by either the power supply and/or the motherboard. To help determine if this is the cause of your issue try turning the computer on, off, and back on as fast as possible, making sure the computer power light goes on and off each time. In some situations you may be able to temporarily get the computer to boot.
This should only be used as a temporary workaround if you're able to get this to work. Often this is good for users who may have not done a backup and need to get the computer up one more time to copy files before starting to replace hardware.
Disconnect and reconnect the CPU For users who are more comfortable working with the inside of their computer or who have built their computer one last recommendation before assuming hardware is bad is to reseat the CPU by removing it and putting it back into the computer.
Bad motherboard, CPU, RAM, and/or power supply If after doing all of the above recommendations you continue to have the same issue unfortunately it is likely that you have bad Motherboard, CPU, and or RAM. The next step would be either to replace these components and/or have the computer serviced. If you plan on doing the repairs yourself or you are a repair shop it is suggested that you replace the Motherboard first, RAM, CPU, and then power supply in that order and/or try swappable parts from other computers.

Gateway all in one touch screen went all black one long and two short beeps.what happened


Ok first turn the power off at the wall & disconnect the power cable, now open your computer. Once open if you do not have an ani-static strap simply touch the case to discharge any static and keep your hand there. Whilst you have one hand on the case with the other hand gently press down on the ram & any add-on cards to ensure they are seated fully, secondly again whilst still holding the case with 1 hand make sure that all other connectors such as power, hdd, etc & all connections to the motherboard are fully seated. Then after you have done all this plug you power cable back in and re-connect the power cable to mains & try restarting your computer if it starts as normal then it was one of the components had creeped up with the cycling up & down of the pc this is a normal thing due to expansion & contraction of the metals etc that make the components up inside your pc. If this hasn't helped then turn it off at the wall again & disconnect power cable from the wall & computer then you can take out all add-on cards & add the power back to the system & start up your pc if it doesn't start then it is the hdd has either failed or become corrupted & will either need to be recovered professionally or repaired or replaced it is cheaper to replace a hdd than to have it repaired. Yet if you computer starts then shut down add 1 add-on card back to the system & start up if it starts with that add-on card continue to add the add-on cards back in until it fails that's if it a case of an add-on card failing. If it is an add-on card that has failed simply purchase a new add-on card & install remember to remove the old add-on card prior to adding a new 1 unless it is the exact same add-on card to avoid conflicts.

Maxdata tower computer : - when switched on bleeps 2/3 times and doesn't engage the mouse or the keyboard and the monitor shows " no video input ".Just no response and doesn't turn itself on...


BIOS Beep Codes
Whenever a recoverable error occurs during POST, the BIOS displays an error message describing the problem. The BIOS also issues a beep code (one long tone followed by two short tones) during POST if the video configuration fails (a faulty video card or no card installed) or if an external ROM module does not properly checksum to zero.
An external ROM module (for example, a video BIOS) can also issue audible errors, usually consisting of one long tone followed by a series of short tones. For more information on the beep codes issued, check the documentation for that external device.
There are several POST routines that issue a POST terminal error and shut down the system if they fail. Before shutting down the system, the terminal-error handler issues a beep code signifying the test point error, writes the error to I/O port 80h, attempts to initialize the video and writes the error in the upper left corner of the screen (using both monochrome and color adapters).
If POST completes normally, the BIOS issues one short beep before passing control to the operating system.

PC will not boot up. Almost did once but screen went black. Reboot doesn't help. No green light on monitor and PC makes a long slow beep over and over. I have recovery discs but when put it nothing...


Based on your description of your problem, my educated guess is that you have a problem with the system board or motherboard. Checking Compaq support site, it says that beeps are generally heard when a hardware device is not connected properly or has failed.

First thing to try is disconnect the keybaord and mouse and try to start the computer again. What we are trying to do is find out which hardware device might be involved. So start with the keyboard an mouse. If the computer still does not start, remove any periferal drives, like floppy or cd drives.

There are several beep codes, below are a few examples listed:

Beep codes common to HP and Compaq Desktop PCs The following beep codes are common to many HP and Compaq desktop computers. Use these codes first before referring to the other code lists. NOTE: Not all codes are shown. Beeps Description 1 short beep and 1 long beep Memory problem 2 short beeps and 1 long beep (repeats 5 times) Unable to initialize video or video card required but not installed 3 short beeps and 1 long beep CPU configuration error or CPU type is not compatible The following beep codes are common to many HP and Compaq desktop computers that can occur while restoring, flashing or updating the BIOS : Beeps Description 1 short beep Legacy floppy drive or CD/DVD drive not detected 2 short beeps Floppy diskette or compact disc not detected 3 short beeps Unable to start flashing (such as when missing a utility or BIOS image) 4 short beeps Flashing failed (checksum error, corrupted image, etc.) 5 short beeps BIOS recovery successful Try working on this solution and see if you can get the computer to start. Blank screen


Try plugging the laptop into an external monitor to make sure the laptop is booting up properly. If it is unplug the monitor from the laptop; or if you know the laptop boots up fine and you get the windows audio when it boots and the initial starting beeps then forget the monitor. Shine a torch or light source on the screen and if you see a faint picture then the inverter on the screen has developed a fault.

Computer beeps and fails to start


If there was recent hardware added to it or RAM then try removing it and boot up. You can try resetting the RAM. You can also check all cables and power within the case to make sure everything is connected properly. Listen for the fan on the PC, if the fan doesn't start up then it could be an overheated mother board. Beeps can mean a number of different things. If there's no error on the screen then it probably isn't getting further then the BIOS. I hope that helps.

Beeps on startup


plz check with the RAM...

open the cabinet... and try taking out the ram and clean it with a smooth cloth... fix it back again...and start your computer...

this should resolve your problem...
